Review of Graphing Understanding Graphs

A graph is a visual display of information or data A graph is a visual display of information or data. Graphed data has greater impact. Trends (changes) stand out Quantities can be easily compared

Line Graphs – are used to show trends or how the data change over time.

Bar Graphs – are useful for comparing information

Circle (pie) Graphs – are used to show how a quantity is broken down into parts.

Graphing Basics Bigger is better Each graph needs a descriptive title Axes should be clearly marked (with units) Use a ruler to draw axis lines X – axis is along the bottom Y – axis is vertical (along the side) Lines drawn for units are equally spaced

Check for understanding Which type of graph is used for the following? Data changing over time. line Parts of a whole Pie Data that is compared Bar

Check for understanding Which type of graph is used for the following? Measurements of a tree’s growth line The percent composition of a sample of soil Pie The populations of different countries in 1984 Bar
