A girl pulling a tub of coal along a mine shaft. Mines were always in danger of flooding. In 1838 a stream overflowed during violent thunderstorms and flooded a mine. The flooding caused the deaths of 26 children. Eleven girls aged between 8 and 16 and 15 boys aged between 9 and 12 years died. When Queen Victoria heard about the disaster she ordered an enquiry. SAMPLE SLIDE When the results of the enquiry were published people were shocked at the conditions the children were forced to work in.
