Equipment Slide 2 table printed per student Slides 5-7 printed as instructions per station Green pens Card sort (already cut up to save time) Double bubble sheet per student Feely boxes. Marbles, rice and water Beakers Tray of materials (solids, liquids and gases) for student to touch and feel. 3x syringes – one filled with water, air, and sand. 3 blocks – one wood, metal, polystyrene. Basic electrical circuit – bulb, battery, wire, croc clips Air freshener, squash in a small beaker, solid in a beaker – testing if it diffuses/spreads out

Comparison task. students to copy this into their books or you can print so that they can stick in books. They need to write similarities in the middle bubbles like – particles are held together etc. Differences – solids are fixed and have a solid shape whereas on the liquid differences you could put takes the shape of the container.

DO NOT PULL THE PLUNGER OUT!! Three Blocks Here are 3 blocks. They are the same shape and size but are made from different materials. Find the mass of the blocks. What do you notice? Why is this? Syringes Here are 3 syringes. One is full of sand (solid), one is full of water (liquid) and one is full of air (gas). Try and squeeze the syringes. What do you notice? Why is this? DO NOT PULL THE PLUNGER OUT!!

Conductor or not Beaker challenge Here are different materials. Connect them into the circuit and see if they bulb lights up. What do you notice? Why is this? Key word: Conducts electricity. Beaker challenge Fill the beaker with the marbles. What do you notice? Add in the sand to the beaker containing the marbles. What do you notice? and why? Now pour the water into the beaker. What happens? And why?

What is Matter? Matter consists of very small particles. The difference between solids, liquids and gases is in how these particles are ARRANGED. You may have heard the terms ATOMS or MOLECULES instead. Questioning – how can we represent a particle?
