Just what is a rubric?

Definition of a rubric. . . A scoring tool that lists the criteria for a piece of work or 'what counts.' For example, a rubric for an essay might tell students that their work will be judged on purpose, organization, details, voice, and mechanics. For example, a rubric might allow students to judge themselves on a piece of work or their behavior, work ethic, and collaboration.

Why use rubrics? They help students and teachers define "quality." When students use rubrics regularly to judge their own work, they begin to accept more responsibility for the end product. It cuts down on the "am I done yet?" questions. Rubrics reduce the time teachers spend grading student work and makes it easier for teachers to explain to students why they got the grade they did and what they can do to improve.

Know Expectations If students can read a rubric, they know what is expected of them. If students can read a rubric, they can better reach what is expected of them. If students can read a rubric, they know what has to be done. If students can read a rubric, they get feedback on skill areas. If students can read a rubric, they can recognize and address their strengths and weaknesses.

How do rubrics help the student and teacher? Rubrics provide a way for a student and a teacher to measure the quality work—whether an assignment or classroom behavior. When a student's assessment and a teacher's assessment don't agree, they can schedule a conference to let both the student and teacher explain the scoring.

Our rubric Today, you are going to learn how to use a rubric to assess yourself. I will also use the same rubric to assess you. We will meet to discuss any areas that we differ on. Remember, this is not to be punitive. IT’S A LEARNING TOOL THAT ALLOWS YOU TO REFLECT ON YOU!
