Equine Husbandry What is husbandry? What is husbandry?

Husbandry= “….concerned with care and production of animals…”

What are the care requirements of horses?

Care requirements Company Vaccinations Feed Warmth Water Dry Grooming Farriery Dental Attention Worming Shelter Disease & Pathogen free Vaccinations Warmth Dry Cooling Exercising Veterinary Attention Training Handling Socialising

Care Requirements link to welfare Hard to assess welfare/well-being as horse is not able to tell us how it is feeling… FAWC and UFAW initiated and publicised 5 freedoms as a concept for assessment of welfare, now widely used by all welfare organisations and sometimes also as a legal framework.

Welfare UFAW 5 Freedoms Freedom from hunger & thirst Freedom from pain, injury & disease Freedom from fear & distress Freedom from discomfort Freedom to exhibit natural behaviour

Husbandry (Provisional of five freedoms) Good quality feed suitable for horse, constant supply of clean fresh water Safe environment, minimising injury, vaccinations, prevention and treatment of conditions Kind and fair handling and restraint, demonstrating understanding of natural behaviour to minimise stress, suitable social groupings and environmental stimuli Provision of bedding, appropriate temperature, rugging of clipped horse, treatment of skin conditions/parasites Opportunity to graze, before social interactions, experience grooming… Hunger & Thirst Pain, Injury & Disease Fear & Distress Discomfort To perform natural behaviour
