The Tudor Exam

The Exam- 2hrs 30mins Section A 01- Extract Question based on 3 Extracts- 30 Marks Section B 02,03,04- Three essays, you choose two (25 Marks each) Total for paper 80 marks

The Basics: Section A- One question, 3 Extracts, 30 marks, 60 mins, 6 pages Using your understanding of the historical context, assess how convincing the arguments in these three extracts are in relation to…. Section B- 3 questions, you choose 2. Each question: 25 marks/ 45mins/ 4-5 pages Each of the questions must relate to one the key questions. Every question must cover at least 20 years Two questions will be from the first year of the course and two will be from the second year

6 Key questions How effectively did the Tudors restore and develop the powers of the monarchy? In what ways and how effectively was England governed during this period? How did relations with foreign powers change and how was the succession secured? How far did intellectual and religious ideas change and develop and with what effects? How did English society and economy change and with what effects? How important was the role of key individuals and groups and how were they affected by developments?

Section A Extract question testing you ability to understand, evaluate and make judgements about how convincing the views of historians are (A03) The questions must relate to one the key questions. The question must cover at least 20 years

Q1 Extracts of historians’ views: 30 marks/ 60mins/ 6 pages Using your understanding of the historical context, assess how convincing the arguments in these three extracts are in relation to…. You look at the extracts one at a time and must make a judgement on each about how convincing (do you agree with) the view of the historian is. The mark scheme has three parts: Firstly you must fully and in detail explain what the view expressed in the extract is concentrating on explaining their overall view. Then any parts of their argument Secondly you need to bring in your own knowledge to examine how convincing/ unconvincing aspects (note this is plural!!!) of the argument presented are. This should involve about 4 paragraphs. Thirdly you write a conclusion giving an overall judgement of how convincing the arguments in the extract are.

Essay Structure Intro- definitions, criteria, argument Main body- A range of paragraphs on both sides of the argument, make sure you PEEL. Maintain a clear line of argument. Use as mant precise examples as you can. Conclusion g over your judgement explain how the historical evidence backs it up.
