It shows that organisms have changed gradually over millions of years. Biogeography is the study of the location of organisms around the world. Which of the following best explains how biogeography can provide evidence for evolution? It shows that organisms have structures that serve no purpose but that resemble structural roles in related organisms. It shows that there are similarities and differences among the DNA of different species. It shows that organisms have changed gradually over millions of years. It shows that some organisms that are unrelated have developed similar adaptations to similar environments. D

From Wolf to Dogs Lab The same species? How is this possible?

Hard as it may be to believe all dogs descended from the Gray Wolf.

Breeding of working dogs like the fleet saluki began long before pure-breeding for looks began in the late 19th century.

Want silken-haired ears and a tiny face Want silken-haired ears and a tiny face? You can breed for it in just a few generations. Here, a papillon.

Suffering from narcolepsy, a condition characterized by sudden bouts of deep sleep, this Doberman is paying the price of intensive inbreeding

From Wolf to Dog Pre-Lab Should have answered questions 1-8 What kind of selection is dog breeding? Are we still seeing evolution in bog breeding? NOW we answer questions 8-10

Pre-Lab: #8 What is the summary of the procedure? A few changes to make…. Only doing 5 rounds #6 Don’t need to “keep track of where they came from…” Main points Should have 24 cards in a deck that represent wolf genes in a population Need a score keeper to calculate totals of each hand Each student should be dealt 6 cards each hand Each hand represents genes for one wolf Record initial hands & 5th hands Random mating occurs after each hand: each student draws two new cards from deck and rolls dice = change number on card

Questions 9 -10 What is the hypothesis? What is the purpose of the Lab?

Two Groups Half the room Group A Half the room Group B Two lowest hand totals per group Remark numbers on the cards of the two other hands Half the room Group B Lowest and Highest hand totals per group

Questions/Analysis What does our data show us? Group A vs Group B Low #s = AGGRESSIVE High #s = TAME

In his trips to the Galapagos Islands, Charles Darwin observed that 4 of the 13 species of the islands' finches have beaks adapted to eating specific foods. Which best explains how these facts provide evidence for divergent evolution? The finches were different species but resemble each other because of how they evolved in a similar environment. The finches descended from similar ancestors and have evolved adaptations in response to each other's influences. The finches descended from the same ancestor but evolved along their own lines in isolation from each other. The finches descended from a common ancestor but evolved differently in response to their environment. D

Which of the following best illustrates natural selection? A. An organism with favorable genetic variations will tend to survive and breed successfully. B. A population monopolizes all of the resources in its habitat, forcing other species to migrate. C. A community whose members work together utilizing all existing resources and migratory routes. D. The largest organisms in a species receive the only breeding opportunities. A

A. It provides information about the organisms' habitats. The scientific theory of evolution is supported by different types of evidence. The diagrams below show the skeletons of two different animal species. How does comparing the skeletons of these animals provide support for the scientific theory of evolution? A. It provides information about the organisms' habitats. B. It shows possible common ancestry between organisms. C. It provides information to determine the organisms' ages. D. It shows possible chromosomal similarities between organisms. B

When Darwin first proposed his theory of evolution by natural selection, the field of genetics did not yet exist. In what way does genetic science now contribute to the study of evolution? Scientists can create organisms that were extinct using DNA from fossils and better understand how they evolved. Scientists can use genetic engineering to carry out the process of evolution over just months instead of millions of years. Scientists can compare the DNA from fossils in rock to determine evolutionary relationships among extinct species. Scientists can determine evolutionary relationships among living species by comparing amino acid sequences coded for by DNA. D
