Abraham Lincoln Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the US. He is best known for freeing slaves in the Confederate Union. He was buried in Springfield, Illinois in 1865.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND This text was spoken on the Saturday of March 4th, 1865. It was written to tell that neither the Confederate nor the Union expected or wanted such a large-scale battle. During this moment, the Civil War between the Confederate states of the south and the Union states of the north was going on.

Summary Abraham Lincoln told his audience that they should get over with the war. He also thinks that all Americans believe in the same God so they are equal to each other and shouldn’t fight each other. He said that God made the civil war start, but it is ready to end now. Towards the end of his speech, he said the famous quote, which is that God gave everybody the same rights and that everybody should help by being a good citizen and do a good job of it.

RELEVANCE This is an important part of American History because it helped cause the end of the Civil War and free southern slaves.
