Agree Learning Outcomes: Topic: P6.1.1 Atoms and Isotopes Spec link: P Time: 75 mins Recorded Assessment: Review: Peermark diagrams. Peermark definition. Peermark symbols. Present New Knowledge: Should be existing knowledge from P1.1 Model of the Atom and C1.2 Atomic Structure Video: “A is for Atom” Part 1 up to 4:18 Only. Display Isotopes of hydrogen. Agree Learning Outcomes: What is in the nucleus of an atom? What is an Isotope? How do we represent Isotopes? Extension: How do we represent relative abundance of isotopes? Apply To Demonstrate: Subatomic bingo! Definition of isotope in own words. Students write symbols for carbon isotopes. Construct Meaning: Students draw labelled diagram using mass and proton numbers of lithium. Complete table of properties of subatomic particles. Discuss how different isotopes of hydrogen could be described, stating similarities and differences in structure (and properties). Discuss how different isotopes of hydrogen could be displayed as symbols with proton and mass numbers.

Nuclear Bingo Choose any 9 elements from the first 20 on the periodic table (outline below) and place them in a 3x3 grid. House points for the first to get 3 in a row. Construct meaning. Give clues to elements in terms of numbers of protons neutrons and mass number.

What is in the nucleus of an atom? What is an Isotope? LO P6.1.1 Atoms and Isotopes Learning Questions: What is in the nucleus of an atom? What is an Isotope? How do we represent Isotopes? Extension: How do we we work out the average mass of isotopes?

What are ISOTOPES ? Watch this (first 4:17 only)

Isotopes have the same atomic number, but different mass numbers. Below are three isotopes of hydrogen. What are their similarities and differences? Give a definition of “Isotope”: “Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same number of protons and electrons, but different numbers of neutrons.” Isotopes have the same atomic number, but different mass numbers. Give students five minutes to for their definition, the give answer and peermark. Use 100g masses How do you think the similarities and differences between these different isotope of hydrogen affect their properties?

What is in the nucleus of an atom? What is an Isotope? LO P6.1.1 Atoms and Isotopes Learning Questions: What is in the nucleus of an atom? What is an Isotope? How do we represent Isotopes? Extension: How do we we work out the average mass of isotopes?

On the left is the normal, common isotope of hydrogen with its symbol. How would you write the symbol for the others?

What is in the nucleus of an atom? What is an Isotope? LO P6.1.1 Atoms and Isotopes Learning Questions: What is in the nucleus of an atom? What is an Isotope? How do we represent Isotopes? Extension: How do we we work out the average mass of isotopes?

You can’t get half a neutron so how can chlorine have a mass of 35.5? Only 75% of chlorine atoms have a mass of 35. The other 25% are isotope with a mass of 37. 35.5 is the average mass of chlorine. Isotopes of other elements are usually so rare that they have little effect on the average mass. These are often rounded off to the nearest whole number.
