Students in technical or applied fields of study face two types of courses: technical courses and related courses in other disciplines.

Reading Technical Material Read Slowly Reread When Necessary Have a Specific Purpose Pay Attention to Illustrations and Drawings Use Visualization Mark and Highlight

Learn to Read Technical Manuals Preview the manual. Locate important sections to read first. Learn the codes, symbols, commands, or terminology used in the manual. Work with the manual and the equipment simultaneously. Use the index or make your own. Simplify the manual if the need arises.

Thought Patterns in Technical Fields Process 1. Prepare study sheets that summarize each process. 2. Test your recall by writing out the steps from memory. 3. Write difficult or lengthy procedures on index cards for review. 4. Be certain to understand the logic behind the process.

Thought Patterns in Technical Fields Problem-Solving Strategies Step 1: Specify the problem. Step 2: Analyze the problem. Be flexible in your analysis. Brainstorm possibilities. Talk with others about the problem. Step 3: Formulate a solution path. Step 4: Evaluate possible solution paths. Step 5: Implement the solution.
