Presentation transcript:

Where do the extra greenhouse gases come from? Nature: Human Activity? Both/Neither

Use the following slides and videos to complete: Where do Greenhouses come from? As you are reading or watching the videos write details as to how the sources emit the greenhouse gas.

Greenhouse Gases Gases that trap heat in the atmosphere are called greenhouse gases. Carbon dioxide (CO2): Carbon dioxide enters the atmosphere through burning fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil), solid waste, trees and wood products, and also as a result of certain chemical reactions (e.g., manufacture of cement). Carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere when it is absorbed by plants as part of the carbon cycle. Methane (CH4): Methane is made during the production and transport of coal, natural gas, and oil. Methane is given off from livestock (cows, etc.) and other farming practices. Nitrous oxide (N2O): Nitrous oxide is given off during farming and from factories, as well as during burning of fossil fuels.

What is a Fossil Fuel? A combustible (can catch on fire) material, found deep in the Earth’s crust that has been under pressure for millions of years. There are 3 types of Fossil Fuels found in Earth’s crust. Natural gas Coal Oil

COAL Generating Electricity Coal is used for: Old coal furnaces Old locomotives Power generators at some factories Making steel

Oil Oil is used for: Transportation fuels (gasoline) Fuel oil for heating Generating Electricity Road oil (tar/asphalt)

Petrochemicals are products made from fossil fuels, mainly oil. Man-made rubber Plastics cosmetics WAX medicine

Natural Gas Oldest fossil fuel Found deepest in Earth’s crust Found as a gas Made from decayed animals Gas companies add a sulfur smell to the fluid so that you know it is their because it is natural invisible and odorless.

Natural Gas Household Uses Heat water – hot water heaters Heat homes – furnaces Cooking – stoves Drying clothes – clothes dryers Everytime you use these things you are emitting CO2 into the atmosphere!

Fossil Fuel Disadvantages Have a limited supply (It takes a long time to create. So once we use it all up it is gone!) When burning any fossil fuel it puts greenhouse gases such as CO2 and methane into the atmosphere. (Increased levels of greenhouse gases causes Global Warming. )

Non Renewable Energy Resource 57% of your electricity comes from coal and natural gas! Remember to turn out the lights!!!

Burning Fossil Fuels

FOSSIL FUELS

When you are using electricity you are emitting CO2 into the atmosphere! Did you know most video game consoles use a lot of energy even when off. Most of them go into standby mode and do not shut completely down. How much CO2 has Fortnite released into the atmosphere????

Think about ways we could reduce our use of fossil fuels. (farming) Think about ways we could reduce our use of fossil fuels. (Factories)

Deforestation Watch the video and add a short description of how deforestation contributes to Climate Change.

Forest fires and decaying plants and animals release Carbon into the atmosphere. All living things are made of carbon. When they decompose or burn the carbon inside them is released as CO2.

Fire Reaction FIRE When fuel like wood is burned, carbon dioxide is produced.

Methane Watch the video and write details about what releases Methane into the atmosphere.
