Doctors of the holocaust and methods of dehumanization Kaelyn Corun & Olivia Creel

Doctors of the Holocaust Dr. Josef Mengele One of the most well known holocaust doctors Most infamous for his experiments on twins once tried sewing a pair of twins together to make them conjoined Chief provider of gas chambers  Once gassed a block of 750 women because they were infected with lice

Josef Mengele

Doctors of the Holocaust Dr. Carl Clauberg injected chemicals into the wombs of thousands of women Caused inflamed ovaries, stomach spasms, and bleeding Placed men/women between 2 x- ray machines pointed at their sex organs

Doctors of the Holocaust Dr. Herta Oberheuser killed children with oil and evipan injections then removed limbs and vital organs while they were still conscious  Inflicted wounds meant to imitate battlefield wounds, then rubbed foreign objects such as wood, rusty nails, glass, dirt, or sawdust in them

Doctors of the Holocaust Dr. Aribert Heim (Dr. Death) injected gasoline into the hearts of healthy Jews Performed surgeries without anesthesia Also removed tattooed skin of prisoners and used them to make seat covers

Experiments Experiments can be divided into 3 categories: 1st- facilitating the survival of Axis Military  High altitude experiments- conducted in low-pressure chambers  to test the maximum altitude from which crews of damaged aircraft could parachute to safety Freezing experiments- used prisoners to test effective ways to treat hypothermia Seawater experiments- used prisoners to find ways to make seawater drinkable. Experiments included forcing men to drink nothing but seawater for 90 days straight.

High-Altitude Experiments Freezing Experiments Seawater Experiments

Experiments 2nd- developing/testing pharmaceuticals/treatments for illnesses/injuries sustained in the field Tested treatments for contagious diseases such as malaria, typhus, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, yellow fever, and infectious hepatitis  Experimented with bone grafting  Tested efficacy of sulfa drugs (antibiotics) Subjected prisoners to mustard gas and phosgene to test for possible antidotes

Experiments Mustard Gas

Experiments 3rd- intended to establish Jewish racial inferiority Twin experiments See how dfferent races withstood various contagious diseases

Dehumanization To deprive someone from their natural rights, such as individuality, compassion, and/or civility

Methods of Dehumanization Referred to people as numbers/tattoos/register them Stripped and shaved Separated men, women and children, elderly sent away Children were ripped from mothers' arms. Whole families were split and most never saw loved ones again Took all personal items such as shoes, watches, jewelry Work or die/food in camps Propaganda was used to say Jews and other inferior "races" should be eliminated

Methods of Dehumanization Put the Star of David on clothes to segregate them from other people and them punished if they didn’t  Surrounded by death, disease, and unhygienic conditions  Forced to dig their own graves An estimated 1.5 million children were killed in concentration camps including, Jews, Gypsy children, and Germans with disabilities

Reasons for Dehumanization Germans thought they were superior  Thought their morals needed considerations Wanted to completely eliminate them Nazis wanted to break them  Made them social outcasts and look bad so they had an excuse to kill innocent people
