Potential Market 25 million kids age 5-11 in the US 84,000 schools Thousands of parks Studies show an increased desire for interactive playground equipment we've got thousands of customers, and they're looking for more interactive (and specifically musical) equipment. Looking to capture 1% of the market w/ profit of ~1000$ per unit From an article on child development: "An essential element of learning in the early childhood years is the opportunity to affect the environment...In addition, ...children learn a great deal by manipulating the materials and equipment in their world. Nearly all indoor play materials-puzzles, blocks, art materials, musical instruments, and dramatic play props-can be manipulated by children. On the playground, however, this diversity is rare. Children deserve the same diversity and richness in their outdoor play environment as they have indoors." http://www.earlychildhood.com/Articles/index.cfm?A=249&FuseAction=Article

Price Comparison Public Consumers Private Consumers Steel Frame: $500-$1500 Spring Type: $1000-$2500 Wood Plank: $500-$1000 Private Consumers Current Plastic Models: $50 - $200 I’ll be breaking down the costs at each place below. w/ URLs For the Steel Frame: This your typical seesaw with a steel frame. NOTE: for all the steel ones, it all looks like the same model, I kept trying to find different ones, but this was all I could find, I’ll look for some more, and if I find it, then I’ll send it to you. The first three are the same, the last one in the steel section are different. Maintenance and Durability Wear and Tear Weather conditions Vandalism Heavy use by children Ten year maintenance free lifespan Some of the biggest design considerations will be to account for maintenance and durability Able to be used in florida up to maine and in california and in the desert. Maintenance free or require very minimal yearly attention

Diagram of Air Flow for One Side of See-Saw Here you can see how the air flows as a child rides down on the see-saw. The pump is pushed in by the downward motion, pushing air through the tube into the child’s control device. (click to advance) The control may be rotary, but it is shown here as linear for clarity. Depending on where the hole in the plate is, the air flows through any of several tubes into the corresponding pipe (click to advance) producing a tone. These three systems, the pump, control, and pipes, are our most critical modules, and we’ll talk more in depth about them in a bit.

Pumping Requirements Requirements for Small Organ Pressure = 0.2 to 2.0 kPa Air Flow Rate = 0.03 m3/s Feasibility – Piston Pump 0.6 ft Ø The air flow value for real organs is much higher than for our mock up that was mentioned in one of the first slides. To test the feasability however, we want to see if we can pump enough air to meet the requirements a actual organ. Assumptions: 45 lb 5 year old. Going at 1 Hz No losses in piston system With an efficiency of 30% we will still have adequate pressure to play music Air Transfer Challenges Losses from leaks and head loss Valves O-rings 1 ft stroke Pressure = 6.5 kPa Air Flow = 0.03 m3/s

Control System Grip Shift Handle Bar 4 Notes Per Side Air From Pump Non locking, continous rotation for better durability and ease of use Air to Organ Pipe A Grip Shift Handle Bar 4 Notes Per Side Plastic selector allows for one note to be played at a time

Mock up Air flow requirements Flue: 3mm tall, 30mm wide One pipe needs air at: Between 0.2 and 2 kPa Max. 200 cm3 / s flow rate Easily provided by a fraction of child’s weight Flue – air exits here For mock up design we require: To be sure that children using our see-saw would provide enough power to make a good sound, we first assumed that each pipe has a flue no larger than 3mm by 30 mm, though most will be much smaller. Our research indicates that each pipe will then require between 0.2 and 2 kPa driving pressure, and that means that the maximum flow rate required will be no more than 200 cm3/s. A child’s weight is enough to provide this pressure and flow rate for several pipes, and our design limits each child to 2 simultaneous notes, so there is no problem here. The one potential problem is that friction losses in the air tubes will limit the airflow rate, and this will be avoided by simply using tubing of sufficiently large diameter.
