Presentation transcript:

Welcome! September 25th, 2017 Monday Do Now Take a weekly Bell Ringer sheet from the front table. Once the bell rings, we’ll watch a video, and you will have five minutes to respond to the question in at least five sentences. Remember: Do Now's are INDEPENDENT and QUIET exercises. Thank you 

Would you have helped the child? What if it was an adult? Click on the link below to watch a video clip. Respond in writing by providing your thoughts on the following question: Would you have helped the child? What if it was an adult? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92-QkWpacB8 © Presto Plans

Belief Statement Activity For the seven statements below, write whether you agree or disagree. For three of them, give a reason why you agree or disagree. Kindness is more powerful than cruelty. America will never achieve true racial and social equality. Under our justice system, all citizens are treated fairly in the court of law. No one is entirely bad or entirely good. In our country, all men and women are created equal. A single person fighting for what’s right can make a profound impact on the world. People are mostly good at heart.

Pre-Writing Our beliefs are products of our experiences. For the belief statements above, pick the one you feel the most strongly about. For the next six minutes, write about the time or times in your life that have caused you to believe that statement. Try to recall as many details as possible. (Aim for at least 6 sentences)

TKAM: Final Essay Essay Outline: Introductory Paragraph with thesis (your belief statement) Body Paragraph 1: Thesis in To Kill a Mockingbird Body Paragraph 2: Thesis in Society Body Paragraph 3: Thesis in Your Life Concluding Paragraph Works Cited Page For our final project for our To Kill a Mockingbird unit, it will be your job to write a persuasive essay based off of one of the prompts on your paper. In your essay, you will examine the idea in the statement and either prove or disprove it using an example from To Kill a Mockingbird, an example from our modern world (1980 to today), and an example from your own life.

Your Thesis in the Book… Your first body paragraph will focus on how your thesis is shown in the book. Take the next 15 minutes to find three specific examples from the text that you think prove your thesis. Don’t just give a general summary, like “Tom is found guilty even though he was innocent.” Find a specific moment in the text that shows he is innocent or possibly a moment a character talks about how unfair the trail was. Make sure you write down the page numbers for each moment!

Your Thesis in Society… Finally, it is your job to find an example of your belief statement at work in our society. Search the internet for news stories that illustrate your belief. For example, if your statement is that you agree with “Kindness is more powerful than cruelty,” then I might find an article about Eva Kor, a Jewish woman who decided to forgive her Nazi captors during the Holocaust, which caused them to reconsider their beliefs. Make sure you write down the article title, URL, article summary, and an explanation for how the article proves your thesis
