Graduate recruitment

Questions?

What is it and how does it work? Graduate recruitment What is it and how does it work? Quick discussion, any ideas from the group about what this might mean. Could break down the working – what is a graduate, what is recruitment?

Graduate recruitment – what is it? Graduate schemes and graduate training programmes are offered by many large employers. They typically last a year or longer; some extend to 18 months, while others last for two or three years. Graduate training schemes: Graduate schemes typically offer a structured period of training and development. They will involve a series of placements or rotations. It is not uncommon for graduates to study towards a professional qualification alongside their training. These schemes help graduates make an informed career choice. Graduate jobs: Graduate jobs are entry-level roles that require people with graduate level education.

What can you do locally? Addleshaw Goddard, Leeds (Law) Leeds City Council, Leeds (Public sector; Housing; Arts) ASDA, Leeds (Retail; Finance; Marketing) Cummins Turbo Technologies Ltd, Huddersfield (Mechanical engineering) Royal Navy, Leeds (Logistic; Intelligence; Healthcare) 5 examples of what is available in West Yorkshire – comment on the range of opportunities (different sectors) Might be worth adding more examples from Bradford/Calderdale and Wakefield as well (depending on where this presentation is being used).

What are the benefits? You're likely to receive a starting salary in the higher scale of graduate salaries. The training will be of a very high standard and you get paid while training. There may be opportunities to travel, depending on how international the company is. You'll develop important career skills in an environment that caters to graduates straight out of university. You will meet lots of influential professionals and make great contacts. 5 examples of what is available in West Yorkshire – comment on the range of opportunities (different sectors)

Graduate schemes – fast facts The median starting salary for a graduate programme is £30,000 per year. They are often very competitive to get on to. Most graduate schemes require a 2.1 degree. Recruiters warn that you are unlikely to get a place on a graduate scheme if you have no work experience. Investment banks, on average, offered the highest graduate starting salary in 2017. 5 examples of what is available in West Yorkshire – comment on the range of opportunities (different sectors)

How do I apply? Complete the online application form and upload a CV. Sit online tests. This could include a verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning or problem solving test. Complete a telephone interview. Attend an assessment centre. Attend a face to face interview. Complete a telephone interview. May need to explain what an assessment centre is, all day activity with different tasks to assess the skills necessary for the job. These may vary but will often include teamwork, problem solving, working independently and evaluating your performance. Receive a job offer! These steps are common in the application process, however it may vary depending on the company.

Numerical reasoning Answer: 4 because across is an increase of 3, and downwards an increase of 2.

Numerical reasoning A drawer contains 3 black socks, 2 red socks and 1 green socks. A = the probability of randomly picking a black sock. B = the probability of randomly picking a sock that is not black. Which of the following statements is true?: A is greater than B B is greater than A A and B are equal Answer is A and B are equal. This is because the probability of randomly picking 3 balls out of 6 is 0.5, regardless of colour.

Numerical reasoning SEO and Social Media Total = 300, SEO and SM = 150 (300/2)

Problem solving Read the instructions and complete the task in groups on your tables. At the end of the ten minutes you must all agree on who you would save and who you would sacrifice! Explain that this is an example of a task they may get at an assessment centre. There are two options of activities for this slide. The boat activity is more detailed and higher level including reference to historical and popular figures. The balloon activity is more appropriate for younger year groups and lower ability students, it uses Disney characters rather than historical figures. Through this task you demonstrate skills in problem solving, communication, teamwork, verbal reasoning and others.

You must be able to explain your reasoning. What’s right for me? In pairs match the person described to the graduate scheme you think is best for them. You must be able to explain your reasoning. ‘Case Study’ Activity – match the person to the best Graduate Scheme for them – they need to be able to justify why they have matched them.
