Q. How many of us would like to have MORE scripture memorized? WHY?

Today’s Goal: Learn how to memorize better (by memorizing John 15:7) Learn about memory. What is happening in our brain when we repeat something. Explore how we can memorize better. (more efficiently and deeper) Memorize John 15:7

John 15:7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you ask whatever you wish and it will be given to you.

1.) Learn about memory. Watch video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2O6mQkFiiw (stop at 2:03)

Principle: Repetition reinforces This means it is better to repeat something perfectly 10 times than to repeat something with partial correctness 50 or even 100 times. Application: learn small chunks perfectly and then add to them, as opposed to running an entire section over and over again with occasional mistakes.

Principle: Repetition reinforces Positive: You can get better and better at anything if you continue to practice it. Negative: There may be behaviors and thoughts which you reinforce daily that you DON’T want to be good at…but are really good at. It is up to us what we will reinforce.

2.) Explore how we can memorize better. Multiple pathways of learning are stronger than a single pathway. What ways can we approach thinking about this verse so that we are repeating it with an engaged mind?

Ways we can approach thinking about this verse so that we are repeating it with an engaged mind: Mental repetition Verbal repetition Repetition with physical motions. Repetition with visual connections/mental associations. Repetition with melodic connections. Repetition with structural (logical) connections. Repetition through time. (take breaks and come back to it later)

Meditation on John 15:7 (seeking to understand what we are memorizing) If you remain in me b. and my words remain in you c. ask whatever you wish and it will be given to you.

Abstaining from sinful behaviors. a. If you remain in me… Application Question: What behaviors might I be engaging in which push me away from Christ? (Any unholy/sinful behaviors or thought patterns which I “abide” in?) Take away: Abstaining from sinful behaviors.

b. …and my words remain in you… The more I abide in his truths, the closer my thinking and deepest desires match God’s thinking and desires. Application Question: How can I do a better job of obtaining the mind of Christ? Take away: Engaging in sanctifying acts.

c. …ask whatever you wish and it will be given to you! Application Question: What things can we ask for from God with absolute assurance that He will give them? Take away: Seek good things from God.
