Chapter 8 Review

Section 1 Question 1: A ceremony in which the President takes the oath of office.  Question 2: April 30, 1789 Question 3:  Treasury  State War

Question 4: is a certificate issued by a government for an amount of money that the government promises to pay back with interest.  Question 5: The government had to borrow money to pay for the Revolutionary War.  Question 6: Managing its war debt; people disagreed over who should be repaid. 

Question 7: Three-part plan including the repayment of federal and state debts, the creation of a national bank, and the imposition of national tariff and prevented its enactment.  Question 8: A tax on imported goods.  Question 9: Congress debated the plan at first, but eventually passed all except the tariff on imports into law.

Question 10: A tax on whiskey was opposed by farmers- especially those in western Pennsylvania, who used corn to make whiskey.

Section 3 Question 1: Washington sent troops to suppress the Native Americans. Treaty of Greenville Question 2: He demonstrated that the nation's government could back up its intentions with military force.  Question 3: Republicans opposed Jay's Treaty but Federalist's supported it. 

Question 4 He warned against political divisions at home. Involvement in foreign affairs. 

Question 5 The U.S. now had a functioning federal government. The economy was improving Washington had avoided war The British had been forced to leave their forts in the Northwest Territory.

Section 4 Question 1: France thought the U. S. should support it in its war with Britain and responded to U.S neutrality by attacking American ships and refusing to deal with American diplomats.  Question 2: He compromised to avoid war.  Question 3: to limit immigration and restrict free speech in response to a mistrust of immigrants during the French Revolution. 

Question 4: The activity designed to overthrow a government. Question 5: The aliens were outsider or someone from another country.  Question 6: This is the idea that the union binding "these United States" is an agreement between the states and that they therefore can overrule federal law. 

Question 7: Republicans opposed the alien and sedition acts, but Republican- backed state legislatures could do nothing to overturn federal law. 

Question 8 The federal government derives its power from rights given to it by the states.  Because the states created the United States, individual states have the power to nullify a federal law. 

Question 9 The federal government derives its power from rights given to it by the American people.  States have no power to nullify federal laws.  States cannot revoke federal powers set forth in the Constitution. 

Question 10 Within 25 years of the alien and sedition acts, people in New England and South Carolina would threaten to leave the Union because they wither disagreed with American foreign policy or opposed laws passed by Congress.
