ENERGY Work The ability to do work or cause change The transfer of Energy

Two Major Kinds of Energy 1. Kinetic Energy – The energy of an object due to its MOTION * KE is Movement 2. Potential Energy- The energy of an object due to its POSITION * PE is Stored (Elastic Potential and Gravitational Potential)

Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Nuclear, Electromagnetic, & Thermal TYPES OF ENERGY Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Nuclear, Electromagnetic, & Thermal

The sum of an objects Kinetic Energy plus its Potential Energy 1. Mechanical Energy The sum of an objects Kinetic Energy plus its Potential Energy (KE + PE = Mechanical) When the bowling ball is moving it has mechanical energy When the ball hits the pins, mechanical energy is transferred to the pins

Examples of Mechanical Energy

Energy caused by the movement of electrons. 2. Electrical Energy Energy caused by the movement of electrons. Easily transported through power lines and converted into other forms of energy

3. Chemical Energy Energy that is stored in chemical bonds and available from chemical reactions. The chemical bonds in a matchstick store energy that is transformed into thermal energy when the match is struck

Examples of Chemical Energy

4. Nuclear Energy Energy is stored in the nucleus of an atom. Nuclear Energy is released when nuclei split or join together. Nuclear Power plants use fission reactions to produce electricity.

5. Electromagnetic Energy Light Energy (aka radiant) Moves through space in the form of waves Includes energy from gamma rays, x-rays, ultraviolet rays, visible light, infrared rays, microwaves and radio bands

6. Thermal Energy Heat Energy The heat energy of an object determines how active its atoms are (remember the Kinetic Theory) A hot object is one whose atoms and molecules are excited and show rapid movement. A cooler object's molecules and atoms will show less movement.

ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY What type of energy cooks food in a microwave oven? ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY What type of energy is the spinning plate inside of a microwave oven? MECHANICAL ENERGY

Electrical energy is transported to your house through power lines. When you plug an electric fan to a power outlet, electrical energy is transform into what type of energy? MECHANICAL ENERGY

What energy transformation occurs when an electric lamp is turned on? ELECTRICAL ENERGY  ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY

What types of energy are shown below? Mechanical and Thermal Energy (Don’t forget friction)

What type of energy is shown Chemical Energy

What types of energy are shown? Electrical, Mechanical and Electromagnetic Energy

Chemical Energy

Thermal Energy

Draw a flow map showing the flow of energy transformations in a car from starting vehicle to driving. You should have 5 different types of energy.
