Raising Money for the American Heart Association

What is Hoops For Heart? It is a community service learning program of the American Heart Association. It teaches kids: The importance of developing heart- healthy habits That being physically active can be fun That raising funds to support cardiovascular research and education helps save lives in their community, in their state, and across the country

What is Hoops For Heart? By participating in Hoops For Heart, millions of students have learned basketball skills while learning how nutrition and physical activity can help them live longer, healthier lives. Hoops For Heart also promotes community service by teaching kids how to help others.

Why is Hoops For Heart Important? Heart disease is the nations #1 killer. Stroke is the 5th leading cause of death in the US.

Why is Hoops For Heart Important? Children are developing significant health issues that can shorten their life expectancy: Almost 1/3 of U.S. children and adolescents ages 2-19 are overweight or obese. Children who are obese are more than twice as likely to die before age 55. 61% of children ages 9-13 aren’t physically active outside of school. On average, American children and adolescents spend 5-10 hours per day occupied by an electronic device.

What is a Heart Attack and a Stroke?

Heart Attacks Unhealthy habits, like not getting enough physical activity, can cause our internal pipes – our blood vessels – to get clogged. When this happens, fatty deposits called plaque build up inside the blood vessel walls. If this happens, the artery can’t deliver the oxygen and nutrients to the heart and the muscle starts to die. This is a heart attack. 1 2 3

Strokes A stroke happens when the blood vessel that carries oxygen to the brain gets blocked or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain can’t get the oxygen it needs, so it starts to die.

Heart Defects @ Dillard? Heart Defects @ Dillard? Copied from an e-mail from the student’s mother: “We are very thankful for the team of highly skilled surgeons and nurses at Childrens National Medical Center in Washington, DC as well as the American Heart Association which has funded much of the research and advances which allowed our daughter to survive.”

Heart Defects @ Dillard? Copied from an e-mail from the student’s mother: “She will face more surgery in the future, but we are encouraged by the continued advances in both medical practice and research as well as the growing community of children who survive against all odds.”
