Canada’s Aboriginal Peoples

ABORIGINAL The original or earliest known inhabitants “native” to a country or region. In Canada, this includes First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

FIRST PEOPLES In Canada, First Nations and Inuit peoples. PG. 5

FIRST NATIONS In Canada, references communities of people identified as “Bands.” 3 Categories: Status Indians, Non-Status Indians, and Treaty Indians. Were formerly referred to as Indian.

INUIT Peoples that inhabit the northern circumpolar regions of Canada, the U.S.A., and Russia. Formerly referred to as Eskimo.

METIS Peoples who trace their ancestry to mixed European (French and Scottish) and First Nations parentage. Formerly referred to as Bois-Brules, Mixed-bloods, Half-breeds, and Black Scots.
