The Oregon Country Section One

A) Rivalry in the Northwest

Oregon Territory The Oregon Territory was made up of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and parts of Wyoming and Montana.

Disputes over Oregon In the early 1800’s, four nations occupied the Oregon territory: the United States, Great Britain, Spain, and Russia.

John Quincy Adams In 1818, John Quincy Adams arranged for the U.S. and. Britain to occupy the territory.

Adams-Onis Treaty The Adams-Onis Treaty moved Spain out of the Oregon Territory. Russia also moved out.

Oregon’s First Settlers Mountain men were Oregon’s first settlers.

John Jacob Astor In 1808, the American Fur Company was established.

American Fur Company Mountain men trapped animals for their fur and traded with merchants.

Rendezvous Once a year, these men met for a gathering where they traded, told stories, and stocked up on supplies.

South Pass Along with trapping, many of the mountain men also explored remote regions of the west.

B) Oregon and manifest destiny

Oregon Missions Missionaries settled in Oregon because they wanted to convert the Native Americans to Christianity.

Narcissa & Marcus Whitman The missionaries preached to the Native Americans and had a school for the children.

Whitman Massacre The Whitmans were killed by the Cayuse Indians. Many Native Americans had died from a measles outbreak and they blamed the missionaries .

Oregon Trail The Oregon Trail began as a huge migration of settlers.

Americans Move West Many Americans raced to settle in the Oregon Territory.

Manifest Destiny Americans believed they had a God given right to take over the continent.

Election of 1844 Oregon became a key issue in the election of 1844. James Polk won with his slogan “54-40 or fight!”

U.S. / British Compromise In 1846, the U.S. and Britain agreed on a northern border between British Canada and Oregon.
