Scientific Revolution

Until well into the 1500’s people saw little difference between science and magic. Most people still believed that the position of the stars influenced human life.

The renaissance encouraged curiosity, investigation and knowledge

Scientific revolution (1500-1700) People began using experiments and mathematics to understand the natural world.

This new approach Answered many questions in physics, astronomy and anatomy

3 new tools were used Scientific instruments Mathematics Experiments

Scientific method was introduced Experiments were repeated to make sure they got the same results. Scientists made conclusions based on what they observed.

Ptolemy’s ancient geocentric theory

Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) Polish Scientist Founder of Modern Astronomy Heliocentric theory or “sun centered” theory

Johannes kepler (1571-1630) German Astronomer, Mathematician Used mathematics to prove that the heliocentric theory was correct. Created laws of planetary motion.

Galileo galilei (1564-1642) One of the first to use a telescope Published his observations; said geocentric theory was incorrect. Church leaders thought his findings contradicted the Bible. Forced to denounce his discoveries, placed on house arrest.

Sir Isaac newton (1642-1727) Proposed the law of universal gravitation Proved that Copernicus, Kepler and Galileo had been correct. Laws of motion, still relevant today
