ASTRONOMY Vocab

Solar System Made up of a star and the planets, moons, and other celestial objects that are bound to orbit it due to gravity.

Galaxy Massive system made up of stars, star systems, star clusters, dust and gasses.

All of space and everything in it. Universe All of space and everything in it.

The act of an object spinning on its axis. Rotation The act of an object spinning on its axis.

The act of one object moving around another object. Revolution The act of one object moving around another object.

Geocentric Model that states the Earth is the center of the solar system. -Aristotle believed in this model.

Heliocentric Model that states the Sun is the center of the solar system. -Copernicus and Galileo believed in this model.

Axis An invisible line that runs from the north to south pole which the Earth rotates on.

The path an object takes around another object. Orbit The path an object takes around another object.

Force that pulls objects together. Gravity Force that pulls objects together.

The resistance to change in motion. Inertia The resistance to change in motion. A tendency to do nothing or to remain unchanged; a property of matter, continue in current state until an external force is applied

Force that causes an object to follow a curved path. Centripetal Force Force that causes an object to follow a curved path.
