Living a Healthy Life Mr. McKay

Learning Targets I can provide one example on how to improve each side of the health triangle. I can identify and explain all three sides of the health triangle. I can explain how health habits affect wellness.

What is HEALTH? Who hear has taken a health class before? What does the word health mean to you? Take a moment to right down your definition in your notebook! What is physical, mental, and social health mean?

The Importance of Good Health Health: is the combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being Wellness: an overall state of well-being, or total health

Promoting a Health Lifestyle

Identifying the THREE Sides of the Health Triangle Physical: exercising, eating nutritious foods, regular checkups, avoiding harmful behaviors. Mental/Emotional: involves how you handle feelings/emotions, sharing your thoughts, positive attitude. Social: supporting people you care about, respecting and valuing people, making friends and relationships.

What are Lifestyle factors? Please take a moment now to list lifestyle factors.

Prevention Prevention: is practicing health and safety habits to remain free of disease and injury. What are some prevention strategies you can think of that you practice or should be practicing?

Health Education Health education- the providing of accurate health information so people can make healthy choices. Individuals Families Communities

Health Literacy Health Literacy: refers to a person’s capacity to learn about and understand basic health information and services and use these resources to promote his or her health and wellness.

Influences on Your Health Heredity: refers to all the traits that were biologically passed on from your parents. What traits have your inherited from your parents???????

Environment What is your environment?

Peers Are people the same age as you or similar interests

Culture Refers to the collective beliefs, customs, and behaviors of a group.

Media Media: the various methods of communicating information, includes radio, television, film, newspapers, magazines, books, and the Internet

Risk Behaviors Are actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others. Please take a moment know to list various types of risk behaviors!

Cumulative Risks Are related risks that increase in effect with added risk.

How to avoid risk behaviors? Do not engage in any type of behaviors that danger your health. You have control over the behaviors you engage in.

Mental/Emotional Needs Are needs that affect your feelings and sense of well-being. Love Belong Make a difference

Journal Entry Risk behaviors is something that WE have control over! What are some risk behaviors, you as teenagers, feel are a concern in your community? Why do you think friends, family, and people in your community engage is harmful risk behaviors?
