Marine Science Research in Puget Sound for Community College STEM Students Ann Murkowski Biology Faculty, North Seattle College

Program Goals: Create authentic research experiences for a diverse group of community college students Accommodate the busy lives and work schedules of community college students Foster a community of student researchers Connect student researchers to their local research community

Key Elements: Students selected from 16 regional community colleges Unlike a conventional REU, students participate in year-long research projects 3-5 day sessions scheduled between quarters Online activities between sessions Student-driven, collaborative research projects

Key Elements: Local Partners and Subject Matter Experts

Key Elements: Funding! NSF support provides stipends for students ($3600), funds for supplies & boat time, and stipends for PI, Co-PI, and consultants.

Progress and Next Steps: In Year One; serving six students on two projects. Program will serve eight students in year two, and ten in year three.
