brusquely (adv.) quickly, almost rudely Makayla rather brusquely refused Kristin’s proposal.

morosely (adv.) in a sad, gloomy manner The students sat morosely on the bench outside the classroom, after each of them completely tanked a SAT quiz. It was pitiful. The little one even cried.

elaborate (adj.) expressed in great detail His excuse for not having his homework was extremely elaborate, involving corndogs, aliens, tornados, and an escaped convict.

mottled (adj.) having a variety of hues or colors The orange, red and green mottled leaves of Zacch’s scarf really complemented his ginger head.

recumbent (adj.) still, without movement The boys lay recumbent on the floor when their friend used the power of his mind to convince them he was holding a gun, and stole their wallets.

complacently (adv.): self-satisfied, unconcerned Jessie looked at the teacher complacently when she suggested that he make some revisions to his rather mediocre essay.

derogatory (adj.): belittling and insulting After enduring a series of derogatory comments about his large feet, Scotty crawled rather pitifully into a chair in the corner of the room, only to be followed by his tormenters.

gingerly (adv.): in a careful, cautious way Austin very gingerly carried the vase of flowers to his new lady friend, in the hopes that she would be overawed by his romantic capabilities.

pugnacious (adj.): eager and ready to fight Makayla always was a pugnacious little thing, and her friends continually had to hold her back from trying to kick some sophomore boy patootie.

archly (adj.): playfully Allen archly flirted with the masculine Britni, in hopes of attracting her attention.
