Opening Activity: March 10, 2017 New unit for our notebook! Next clean page title: Biotechnology There will be about 15 days of opening activities, create space for this in your journal. Biology Riddle…. I'm under your face, I'm outside your mind; A biological case, Pressure brings pain sometimes. What am I? I can… Predict how DNA is used to solve real-world problems Use a micropipette Homework: Planaria CVR due 3/14 Notebooks due 3/15 Cell Cycle Quiz retake by 3/17

Biotechnology…Initial Ideas (write directly on your title page) What will scientists do with the elephant tusk? What can they learn from it? Why was it a problem they had the elephant tusk? Should they be penalized? How can scientists manipulate or study DNA to solve problems? What problem might you want to solve at the atomic-molecular (genetic) level?

Biotechnology Tools - NOTES

Goals for March 13th 1. Watch Micropipette Video. On bottom of notes sheet, answer the following questions: Why is it important to use the right pipet? What is a pipet tip? What is the role of the plunger on the pipet? What do you do with the tip when you are done? Mr. Yates will distribute Lab #15, tape into your journal and complete 1-5, 8 and 9. (Due Tuesday) 3. Pick up two reading handouts. Use Blue BSCS Biology Book in class to complete the following readings (Due Wednesday) Landmark Discovery (pg 529 BSCS) Manipulating Genetic Material (pg 530 BSCS)

Opening Activity: March 14, 2017 I will come stamp your planaria CVR, micropipette questions and Lab #15 work from yesterday. A cell has 14 chromosomes. Draw a cell immediately after mitosis. Explain your drawing, how many cells? How many chromosomes? Why? How does the DNA compare between a muscle and a skin cell? Which pipette would pick up: 8 µl, 32 µl, 155 µl? I can… Use a micropipet, accurately measure out small amounts of liquid. Homework: Notebooks due 3/15 Landmark Discovery questions due 3/15 Cell Cycle Quiz retake by 3/17

Today’s Goals Complete #6 on Lab #15 - Practice measuring out small amounts of liquid. Read “Landmark Discovery” page 529 in biology blue book and answer questions – due tomorrow.

Opening Activity: March 15, 2017 I will stamp reading “Landmark Discovery…” What do we mean by a balanced centrifuge? What are the steps to release liquid from your pipette? What is a restriction enzyme? Read Step #11 from your micropipette lab, create your 3 tubes and label A, B and C. I can… Measure accurately with a micropipette. Explain how DNA can be manipulated by restriction enzymes. Homework: Manipulating DNA Reading due 3/20 Retakes by: Cell Cycle Quiz 3/17 Quest 3/24

Today’s Goals Complete #11 on Lab #15 - Practice measuring out small amounts of liquid. Clean up – put tubes A-C in container at front table, discard trash and put all materials back in tub. Read “Manipulating Genetic Material” page 530 in biology blue book and answer questions – due Monday! Pick up Restriction Enzyme Handout from front table.

GloFish – Zebra Fish w/ Fluorescent Proteins

Genetic Engineering Video Genetic Engineering Video (short) Research in Genetic Engineering

Opening Activity: March 16, 2017 I will stamp restriction enzyme practice. How do restriction enzymes help with manipulating DNA? How do they work? If a strand of DNA was recognized by EcoRI 3 times, what would the final DNA look like? Pick up “DNA Goes to the Races” at front table, read pages 200-201. I can… Explain how gel electrophoresis allows scientists to study DNA. Homework: Manipulating DNA Reading 3/20 Micropipett quiz 3/17 Retakes by: Cell Cycle Quiz 3/17 Quest 3/24

Opening Activity: March 17, 2017 Review your restriction enzyme practice from Wednesday. For each problem: How many fragments of DNA? What are the base pair sizes of each fragment? See whiteboard how to count fragment sizes. 2. Review Micropipette Notes/Lab #15 Quiz will begin shortly. I can… Explain how gel electrophoresis allows scientists to study DNA. Homework: Manipulating DNA Reading 3/20 Micropipett quiz 3/17 Retakes by: Cell Cycle Quiz 3/17 Quest 3/24

Lab #16 DNA Goes to the Races Goal – Investigate how gel electrophoresis allows scientists to study DNA. Read Instructions at Table - Digest your DNA w/ Restriction Enzymes. - Use your lab table as giant gel to simulate DNA position. - Copy gel in journal. Be sure all group members get it for teacher quiz & stamp.
