Connecting the GER Toolbox to Community Research Priorities Heather Macdonald GER Community Planning Workshop, July 2016

Building on the 2015 Workshop: Synthesizing Geoscience Education Research: Where are we? What is the path forward? 2016 Community survey 2015 Group discussions on future directions and priorities of GER How should we support the GER community? How should we better support those interested in becoming GERers? How could we develop a “toolbox” for new GER workers? How should established GER workers develop their research skills? What tools do they need? What are priorities for promoting and supporting the GER community? How can we infuse GER results into educational practices? What are the metrics of student success for geoscience majors? For those taking general education geoscience courses? GER Toolbox – this week Navigating a career in GER Instruments and surveys Analysis tools Getting your education research published Conducting GER studies across institutions Translating GER results in practice

Building on the 2015 Workshop Synthesizing Geoscience Education Research: Where are we? What is the path forward? Topical areas in GER: Identifying outcomes, gaps, and next steps Students' conceptual understanding Cognitive domain and problem solving Instructional strategies to improve geoscience learning The affective domain and metacognition Access and success: broadening participation Nature of science / nature of geoscience Professional development of college/university educators Elementary, middle, and secondary teacher education GER theme issue First Steps Toward Synthesizing Geoscience Education Research – a summary of discussions posted on 2016 workshop program page
