Lesson Plan Title: Sea Battle (Paper-pencil Game) Level: Middle Time: 45 minutes Tools, materials: 2 empty grids for each player, pencils

1.5 Sea Battle Objectives: A1. Whole numbers - Count reliably up to 18, later to 100 - Understand a coordinate system and find position up to 10 by 10 - Understand different coordinate designation - Construct different rectangles (the width is always 1; the length is 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5). - Use games coordinates, like 3B. - Use mathematical coordinates, like (3|2). Description of the lesson 1.5 Sea Battle Description of the lesson 5 min.: Warm up Teacher says “Hello!”to the learners and asks them if they know what is the connection between submarines, the music band “Beatles” and a grid. Collecting students’ answers, teacher presents a video on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2uTFF_3MaA (the song “Yellow submarine” of the “Beatles”) - 2’45’’. Teacher proposes a game called “Sea battle”, a guessing game, in which the learners can find the exact position of ships on and in the sea.

10 min.: Presenting informations 1.5 Sea Battle 10 min.: Presenting informations Teacher makes groups of 2 participants and he gives them pencils and several pairs of grids. He explains that a grid is formed by horizontal and vertical lines, and that all lines have the same distance from each other. The squares in the grid are identified by numbers and letters. He explains the rules: this game is played on 2 grids for each. And pupils have to mark their own ships: 1 Aircraft Carrier (5 squares), 1 Battleship (4 squares), 1 Cruiser (3 squares), 2 Destroyers (2 squares) and 2 Submarines (1 square).

1.5 Sea Battle He adds: in each round, both players take a turn to announce a target square in the opponent’s grid which is to be shot. The opponent announces whether or not the square is occupied by a ship. If it is a miss, the player marks his primary grid with a point. If it is a hit, the player marks this on his own primary grid with a cross. The attacking player notes the hit with a cross or a miss with a point on his own tracking grid. When all of the squares of a ship have been hit, the ship is sunk, and the ship’s owner announces this (“You sank my destroyer!”). If all of a player’s ships have been sunk, the game is over and the opponent has won.

1.5 Sea Battle 15 min.: Free practice of the game One player begins shooting by saying the coordinates. The other player is marking the shots on his grid and is saying: water or hit. If one ship is full of hits, the player has to say: ship has sunk. The game is continuing till one of the players announces that all his ships have been destroyed.

1.5 Sea Battle 10 min.: Worksheets Teacher hands out the worksheets. Each student gets one. He explains that there are different types of grids: first is the one they played, and the second is a mathematically grid. In the game, they used numbers and letters to describe a field, like 3B. In maths, they only use numbers to describe the position of a point, like (3|2) . They complete the worksheet. If there is enough time, they can go back to the game.

1.5 Sea Battle 4 min.: Self-evaluation Teacher gives to learners the correctly completed sheet, so that they can compare theirs solutions to the teachers’one. Then he asks how they managed to do it.
