From Appeasement to War Ch 14 Sec 1

I. Unchecked Aggression The Rape of Nanjing: 1931 Italy’s invasion of Ethiopia Hitler breaks the Versailles Treaty What reasons did Western nations have for appeasing these acts???

The Rape of Nanjing “The Forgotten Genocide”

King Haile Selassie of Ethiopia appeals to the League of Nations: 6/20/1936

sidenote: King Haile Selassie Also known as Ras Tafari “What answer shall I take back to my people?”… “It will be us today, it will be you tomorrow.” Haile Selassie is also regarded as “God Incarnate” by Rastafarians.

H.I.M. Haile Selassie I Speech to the United Nations (excerpt) New York City, NY October 4, 1963 "...until the philosophy which holds one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned: That until there are no longer first-class and second class citizens of any nation; That until the color of a man's skin is of no more significance than the color of his eyes; That until the basic human rights are equally guaranteed to all without regard to race; That until that day, the dream of lasting peace and world citizenship and the rule of international morality will remain but a fleeting illusion, to be pursued but never attained; And until the ignoble and unhappy regimes that hold our brothers in Angola, in Mozambique and in South Africa in subhuman bondage have been toppled and destroyed; Until bigotry and prejudice and malicious and inhuman self-interest have been replaced by understanding and tolerance and good-will; Until all Africans stand and speak as free beings, equal in the eyes of all men, as they are in the eyes of Heaven; Until that day, the African continent will not know peace. We Africans will fight, if necessary, and we know that we shall win, as we are confident in the victory of good over evil..."

II. German Aggression Continues Hitler plans Anschluss- to unite Austria and Germany (another Versailles violation). 1938- Hitler annexed Austria 1939- Hitler took over the Sudetenland, then all of Czecholslovakia. Appeasement failed.

III. Europe Plunges Toward War Western democracies promised to protect Poland- Hitler’s next target. August 1939: Hitler and Stalin sign the Nazi-Soviet Pact: a promise to not fight each other and divide Poland in half.

The Nazi-Soviet Pact Why would 2 enemies do this??? They feared each other. The USSR did not trust its own allies, Britain and France. (Why?) Germany did not want another two front war. Both wanted land in Poland.

The Nazi Soviet Pact One week later, in Sep. 1939, Germany invaded Poland. Britain and France declare war on Germany- WW2 begins.
