Food and Drink Sector Updates Recent development work reflects the importance of the sector and the priorities identified in the Skills Investment Plan Significant activity undertaken in Scotland in 2017-18: Review of existing National Occupational Standards Development of new National Occupational Standards Development of brand new SVQs Review of existing SVQs Development of a new Modern Apprenticeship Framework Development of a new pathway in existing MA Framework Development of a brand new Foundation Apprenticeship

National Occupational Standards During 2017-18 the following suites of National Occupational Standards were reviewed with employers and stakeholders across the 4 UK nations: Production Management Production and Control Operations Supply Chain A brand new suite of National Occupational Standards was developed with employers (primarily led by Scotland): Distilling

SVQs The following existing SVQs were reviewed by employers, providers and stakeholders in 2017-18: SVQ in Food and Drink Operations at SCQF Level 6 SVQ in Food and Drink Operations (Craft Bakery Skills) at SCQF Level 5 SVQ in Food and Drink Operations (Bakery Skills) at SCQF Level 6 SVQ in Food and Drink Operations (Dairy Skills) at SCQF Level 5 SVQ in Food and Drink Operations (Distribution Skills) at SCQF Level 5 SVQ in Food and Drink Operations (Food Sales and Service Skills) at SCQF Level 5 SVQ in Food and Drink Operations (Production and Processing Skills) at SCQF Level 5 SVQ in Food and Drink Operations (Supply Chain Skills) at SCQF Level 6 SVQ in Food and Drink Operations: Food Manufacturing Excellence at SCQF Level 5 SVQ in Food and Drink Operations: Food Manufacturing Excellence at SCQF Level 6 New SVQs developed: SVQ in Food and Drink Operations (Brewing Skills) at SCQF L5 SVQ in Food Technology at SCQF L6

Modern Apprenticeships A new Modern Apprenticeship Framework in Food and Drink Technical at SCQF L6 was developed in 2017-18 This Framework consists of the: SVQ in Food Technology at SCQF L6 Core Skills are mapped at SCQF L5 and embedded within the mandatory units of the SVQ Technical Certificate – the HNC in Food Science and Technology approved of by employers and stakeholders as provided the technical knowledge aspects A new pathway has been added to the existing MA in Food and Drink Operations at SCQF L5: Brewing Skills – consists of new SVQ in Food and Drink Operations (Brewing Skills) at SCQF L5

Foundation Apprenticeship A new Foundation Apprenticeship has been developed for the food and drink sector in 2017-18 Co-designed with employers, this Foundation Apprenticeship will help school pupils develop the skills they need to enter a career in the food and drink industry The Foundation Apprenticeship in Food and Drink Technologies includes: A National Progression Award (NPA) in Food Manufacturing at SCQF level 6 Awards in Health & Safety and Food Hygiene at SCQF level 5 Five units of an SVQ in Food and Drink Operations at SCQF level 6 A substantial work placement Launch for pupils in S5 and S6 in 2017-18 – contracting with colleges being finalised

Planned Developments 2018-19 Substantial programme of NOS reviews planned for 2018-19, consisting of: Business & People: Food Business Strategic Leadership, Food Business Operational Management, Food Business Resource Development, Food Business Growth and Development, Food Business Marketing and Customer Service Product Development Meat and Poultry Processing Fish and Shellfish Processing Milling and Cereals Sweet Confectionery Brewing Fresh Produce Wine Making Support Operations New SVQs planned: Distilling Higher level Brewing Food Technical (Degree Level) Review of existing SVQ: Livestock Market Droving Modern Apprenticeships: New Higher Level Brewing New pathway in Distilling
