8 dead at Florida nursing home

Police are investigating the deaths of eight nursing home residents in Hollywood, Florida, where oppressive heat and humidity set in after Hurricane Irma knocked out much of the power in the area. The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills said the residents, ages 71 to 99, died following a prolonged outage of the air conditioning system due to Hurricane Irma. The center did not lose power during the storm, but it lost a transformer that powers the air conditioning. One resident died late Tuesday. Three more were found dead on the second floor of the facility after rescue units were called in early Wednesday. Four more died in hospitals after the sweltering facility was evacuated Wednesday morning in a chaotic blur of events that prompted checks of other nursing homes in the area. By Wednesday evening, the state had issued an emergency moratorium on the facility admitting new patients, and Hollywood Police were investigating whether any laws had been broken. Gov. Rick Scott said, "I am going to aggressively demand answers on how this tragic event took place. If they find that this facility was not meeting the state's high standards of care, they will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law."

In Other News Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday that it is time to abolish the Electoral College. Clinton won the 2016 popular vote by nearly 3 million votes. But Trump won the Electoral College, a body of 538 members who select the president based on the popular vote in each state, meaning the person who gets the most votes nationally doesn't necessarily win the election. For her election loss, Clinton also faults herself, FBI Director James Comey, for his involvement in the election, Russian President Vladimir Putin for directing operatives to meddle in the election and apathetic voters who only got engaged once the election was over and Trump had won. Democratic leaders -- Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Nancy Pelosi – suggested they had dinner last evening with the president to discuss a possible agreement to fix DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and work out border security issues, though it does NOT include a border wall. President Trump himself tweeted, "No deal was made last night on DACA. Massive border security would have to be agreed to in exchange for consent. Would be subject to vote.” If a deal on some immigration and border issues happens, it would be the second major agreement between Trump, Schumer and Pelosi this month. At least 21 children and two teachers were killed when a fire broke out at a school in Kuala Lumpur. Witnesses reported hearing cries for help from inside the burning building and seeing children unable to escape because of metal grills on windows. Renovations to the building had reportedly blocked a fire exit. Officials are examining whether an electric short circuit caused the fire.
