OUTLINE Introduction Objective VE Job Plan Q&A Information Phase Creative Phase Judicial Phase Development Phase Implementation Phase Q&A The Outline for this presentation is as follows: I will start with Introduction followed by Objectives then I’ll go over the VE Job Plan including Information Phase Creative Phase Judicial Phase Development Phase Implementation Phase And finaly Q&A

INTORDUCTION Project Description 6 new Villas are under construction; the owner would like to find the suitable way for getting the potable water The designer original proposal is to install new RO system that desalinate the raw water from water well Introduction Project Description: We have 6 new Villas are under construction; the owner would like to find the suitable way for getting the potable water. The designer has selected to install new RO system that desalinate the raw water from water well

As you can see in the picture, The new RO shall be located beside the storage tank to provide the tank with potable water. And the potable water lines are connected to the 6 villas from the (18,000 gal) Storage tank.

OBJECTIVE To examine the original proposal with other possible ways and recommend the most suitable system using V. E. techniques. Objective: The objective is basically to ……………………..

INFORMATION PHASE Consultation Records Contact Tel. No. Major Points SAMMNAN Co. 03-8681122 RO unit dealer ZAID ALHUSSAN 03-8175204 Potable water provider Now VE study started with the Information phase For gathering data We have basically two main contacts First is SAMMNAN Co who is specialized in selling RO unit and the famous potable water provider ZAID ALHUSSAN Also, I have my own personal experience since I worked as process engineer for RO unit

INFORMATION PHASE Main Required Criteria Provide potable water flow of 9000 gpd. Meet the minimum potable water specification per international standard (EPA). TDS: below 500 ppm pH: 6.5-8.5 Microorganism: zero The performance critieria is to ………………………. EPA: Environmental Protection Agency

INFORMATION PHASE Other Features The material to be in-kingdom Vendor support shall be provided if needed Spare parts to be available. Size to be reasonable (area below 14 m sq) Control system shall be easy. Minimum use of hazardous chemicals Other features are ------------------ ---------------- -------------------

INFORMATION PHASE Cost Data Idea Unit Price (SR/100 gal) RO Unit (water well) 4.34 RO Unit (SWCC) 5.51 Local Provider 1.82 We obtained the cost data for the main alternatives The unit price of using RO unit that takes its feed from water well which is the original proposal is 4.34 SR/100 gal Whereas the one that takes its feed from SWCC (Saline Water Conversion Corporation) is 5.51and the local provider unit price is 1.82

FUNCTION PHASE Function Worksheet Why Function How To get potable water that meet standard and flow requirement Treat raw water Install new RO skid Now we move to the FUNCION PHASE First we worked in the Function worksheet to determine (Why-Function-How) Why: is to get…………… Funcition is to *……………. And how is by ……………………..

FUNCTION PHASE Identify Present Function verb noun What does it now do? verb noun Drain water What must it do? Treat raw water Transfer water Second we Identify Present Function We asked What does it now do? We answered in verb and noun.. (drain water) And What must it do? Treat raw water Transfer water

CREATIVE PHASE Generate Ideas Install new RO skid using the raw water from SWCC Dig water well to search for sweet water. Have annual contract with potable water provider. Extend pipe from closest sweet water source. Use raw water from the water well for the new RO unit. Have individual RO skids for the 6 villas. Use multistage vaporization process. Wait for upgrading (SWCC) Provide separate potable water piping network and raw water network. Use solar cells to provide electricity to the new skid. We come to the Creative phase After brainstorming, we generated 10 ideas Install new RO skid using the raw water from SWCC Dig water well to search for sweet water. Finally, Use solar cells to provide electricity to the new skid.

JUDICAL PHASE Feasibility Ranking Idea # Purity Probab. of implem. Time to Implement Cost to Develop Experience Total Rank 1 10 8 7 6 9 40 2 18 3 43 4 16 5 38 24 14 13 23 15 In Judicial phase We started with preliminarily evaluation by Feasibility ranking We ranked the pervious ideas base on the certain criteria Purity ,………… and experience As you can see idea# 3 scored the best then idea# 1 and idea # 5.

Idea Comparison Idea Advantage Disadvantage Rank Have annual contract with potable water provider. Safe operation Does not required electricity Requires less manpower No need to have draining facilities as there is no rejected water No major Maint. or spare part required -Require continuous follow up. -Service may discontinue anytime unless backup is provided -Quality of water is not as high as RO unit production (usually higher TSS). 1 Install new RO skid using the raw water from SWCC Very pure water Service is continues The recovery is only 80 %-·  Initial Cost is high·    Safety is lower than the others·   High noise     Need regular checking 2 Use raw water from the water well for the new RO unit Safety is lower The recovery is only 75 -80 %   Both well and RO unit required regular checking. 3 We screened the unfeasible and impractical ideas then we move to the idea comparison in which we listed the advantages and disadvantege For example for the idea of having annual contact with potable water provider, adavantges are ………. And disadvantges are ……………. Simmilary for the other ideas

JUDICAL PHASE Determining Criteria Initial Cost 1-10 Low-High cost Safety 1-10 Low- Highly Safe Magnitude of saving 1-10 Small-Large saving Continuation of service 1-10 Low-High Efforts to monitor/operate 1-10 Low-High efforts The team ranked the idea according to the following criteria

Weights For Evaluation Initial Cost B Safety C Cleanliness D Continuation of service E Efforts to monitor/operate Raw Score Assigned Weight 3 6 5 10 4 8 2 How important B C D E 3 Major Preference A A-B-1 A-C-1 D-2 A-E-1 2 Medium Preference 1 Minor Preference B-2 B-D-1 B-1 C-2 E-2 D-E-1 Here we assigned Wight to each criteria First we determine the importance of each criteria using comparison matrix then we got the total raw score And we adjust them to the assigned weight As you can see cleanliness has highest weight

Continuation of service Efforts to monitor/operate Evaluation Matrix CRITERIA Initial Cost Safety Cleanliness Continuation of service Efforts to monitor/operate TOTAL IDEA Wt. 6 10 8 4 RANK Original method: Install new RO skid using the raw water from well   3 5 7 2 Sub Tot. 18 50 60 80 28 236 Have annual contract with potable water provider. 9 1 48 90 40 16 242 Use raw water from the water well for the SWCC 24 64 226 This is the final evaluation step (evaluaiton matrix) After ranking each idea with for each criteria we found that the second idea (Having ………….) n scored the best 242

DEVELOPMENT PHASE - Assume 10 years service life Savings Item Total Cost (SR) Original: New RO with water well 299, 700 Proposed: Annual Contract with P. W. P. 65,000 ________ Total saving 234,700 % Reduction 78 % Life Cycle Cost Results In th development phase we prepared the total cost for original and proposed idea so and we found that we have 78% reduction in th total cost Similarly we found 87 % reduction in LCC when using the proposed idea Project Annual Amount Original 36,048 Proposed 4,814 TOTAL SAVING 31,234 REDUCTION % 87 %

VALUE STUDY SUMMARY The original design can be very well accomplished without jeopardizing basic or secondary function by install new RO units using water from well. The selected proposed method “Annual Contract with potable water provider” will: Improve the safety Eliminate or minimize the use of electricity and handling hazardous chemicals. Reduces the manpower required Eliminate installing draining facilities as there is no rejected water Reduce the consumption of spare parts and less maintenance. Save money (total cost and LCC) The proposed idea will meet the basic requirement and will cost mush less. The changes needed to implement the new proposal is a very minor engineering work. Read

IMPLEMENTATION PHASE How should it be implemented? The proposed case will be negotiated with local potable water providers and then the best offer shall be selected. The local providers normally transport the sweet water by using big trucks in weekly basis. What should be changed and in what sequence? No major modification work is required. Just prepare the road to the storage tank Who should do it? The selected local potable water provider will take care. How long should it take to start? Any deadline? Negotiation and selection take 20 days. Deadline: before the end of construction work of the Villas. Implementation cost, internal hours? 15 man hours. Total cost SR 300. FINALLAY
