Prehistory During the prehistory period, people did not know there was (or had not created) any other way to take down history, so they drew pictures. Cave art was their way to preserve history for use. Old Stone Age people were considered nomadic because hunter-gatherers had no permanent home. They just followed herds and gathered what they could from the land and then killed some of the herd for food and clothes

New Stone Age is the time from 10000-4000 B. C New Stone Age is the time from 10000-4000 B.C. when people still used stone tools but began experimenting with agriculture.

Beginning of Farming Farming Nomad You will explain the path from a nomad to a farmer. You need to remember the elements that it takes to survive and grow food. Nomad Farming

Agriculture Domesticate is the raising of crops and animals for human use. means to train something to be useful to people. Plants – plant seeds and care for edible plants Animals – taming and breeding Agriculture Domesticate

Farming Nomads hunted/gathered for food sources. When nomads settled in one place- they had to have a water source, good soil and sun. They built permanent homes and settled in one place. Once they had built up a food surplus the population began to grow. Finally, they began to practice specialization of jobs, which is…when people train to do a particular kind of work

With food surpluses (extra supply of something), not everyone needed to farm, other people became artisans. These artisans began to craft tools, baskets, pottery and cloth. All of these items helped this farming settlement grow into a city.

Cities along the Rivers As the population of cities grew governments formed and kept order in society and provided services. cities Social classes Public Works = C i v i l i z a t i o n Writing, art and architecture are a part too. Central Govt. Job Specialization

Social Classes Place the following in order from bottom to top. King Artisans, *Nobles, King, *Priests, Common Workers and Farmers Peasants *in some cultures Nobles are higher and in some cultures Priests are higher Nobles Priests Artisans Common Workers and Farmers Peasants KPNAC

Review What was the difference between the Old Stone Age and the New Stone Age? - Creation of stone tools - Use of fire - Hunting and gathering - Living in a cave - Raising crops - Domestication of plants and animals - Beginning of specialization - Creation of surplus and exchange of goods

Traders and Cities Traders took valuable items such as spices, pottery and tools and traded with far away cities. These traders spread new ideas and customs. Some cities became rich from trade and developed into some of the first civilizations.
