BLended Learning: Online Tools for Learning at School and at Home Darcy and Susan Presented by: Darcy Long Susan Paulson dlong@wccusd.net @darcyteaches spaulson@wccusd.net

Hello, and welcome! We are: Darcy Long: K-6 Education-Technology Instructional “Coach” Susan Paulson: 4th grade teacher, Grant Darcy and Susan Learn about how teachers can achieve an engaging, blended learning classroom using specific learning websites. We’ll overview: Ed1Stop.net, Kahoot!, Khan Academy, and MobyMax. These resources are also home-accessible, empowering parents and children to more easily locate learning support and practice resources. http://padlet.com/darcylong/blendedlearning You can find us at: dlong@wccusd.net @darcyteaches spaulson@wccusd.net

Classroom Technology INtegration Darcy Why technology integration? “How can we bring the student at the back of the classroom to the front?” More effective and engaging instructional time. Teachers’ technology integration should: Enhance teachers’ skills delivery to EVERY student, provide increased opportunities for engaging, at-level practice with greater accountability, and empower students to use digital tools for self-motivated learning. There are no “invisible” students. Students’ technology use should demonstrate: Enhanced teacher-to-student and student-to-student interactions, and increased opportunities for collaborative work and research.

BLENDED LEARNING “Blended learning is a formal education program in which a student learns at least in part through delivery of content and instruction via digital and online media with some element of student control over time, place, path, or pace.” (From Wikipedia.) “SAGE ON THE STAGE” “GUIDE ON THE SIDE” Darcy https://vimeo.com/89546618 https://www.commoncraft.com/video/blended-learning https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blended_learning “….face-to-face classroom methods are combined with computer-mediated activities.” The term blended learninghas evolved in recent years as technology has been increasingly integrated into traditional instruction. A more widely accepted definition of blended learning is the use of online instruction “with some element of student control over time, place, path, and/or pace and at least in part at a supervised brick-and-mortar location away from home” (Staker, Horn, and Innosight Institute 2012). The teacher’s role shifts from “sage” to “guide” because students ideally participate in at-level, differentiated on-line activities.

(Different tools, same interactions.) BLENDED LEARNING https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auzwH1mK2TY&feature=youtu.be&list=PLZ7v1-K0PIbIyDwtRj_dkWYj8iNgR4BaM What it ISN’T. (Different tools, same interactions.) Darcy Technology use does not necessarily equate to a an effective classroom learning environment. Just as any traditional learning tool, the teacher’s ability to plan for technology use that’s meaningful, engaging, and inclusive is key. Tech tool use should enable teachers to have a better “bird’s eye view” or pulse of class / student learning. When well-planned, a blended learning classroom enables teachers to provide small group and individual instruction to better meet individual students’ needs. http://www.blendedlearning.org/what-blended-learning-is-and-isnt/ IT IS…

2. Khan Academy Darcy It is free and accessible. It costs absolutely nothing to watch videos and work on problems. It is available anywhere with internet. You can learn and work at your own pace. You can fast forward, rewind, repeat videos, stop and work out a problem on your own, all without having to consider other students’ or the teacher’s pace. Those who naturally work slower or who are struggling with a particular topic can focus on that topic. Others who may be naturally adept at a certain topic can speed through sections that are less challenging. It provides an incredible amount of math problems for a variety of grade levels (from very basic elementary concepts through calculus). Supports ELLS To make effective use of Khan Academy for their children, parents should frame it as a fun activity instead of studying or a chore. One of the simplest ways to motivate children is by helping them set milestones. Regardless of high-level objectives, children should be focused by working with them to structure/breakdown the main objective into small-sized milestones that can be accomplished in short time periods. Some parents further engage their children by developing family-oriented activities related to Khan Academy. For instance, parents can pick up a new topic on Khan Academy to learn along with their children, they can watch a video and have dinner time discussions about it, parents can compete with their kids or let the siblings compete with each other, they can learn topics separately and role-model good learning habits. http://www.thesismag.com/2014/10/03/the-pros-cons-of-khan-academy/ https://www.khanacademy.org/coach-res/k12-classrooms/plan-and-teach-k12/a/simple-ways-to-use-khan-academy https://www.khanacademy.org/coach-res/k12-classrooms/curriculum-k12/a/motivate-students http://edtechreview.in/trends-insights/insights/845-how-parents-can-use-khan-academy

Fully differentiated learning capabilities Khan academy Darcy Khan is best for assigning skills to the whole class, and for targeted intervention. All Khan content (incl. videos) can be translated in multiple languages. With cell phone apps, students can take their Khan learning anywhere. Fully differentiated learning capabilities

Real-time, student activities management Khan academy Darcy While students work, teachers can monitor what skills are being practiced and assign / reassign as needed. Time on task during school hours and outside of school is tracked. http://www.nctm.org/Publications/Mathematics-Teacher/2015/Vol109/Issue1/Blending-Instruction-with-Khan-Academy/ Four components of his vision for KA’s use as a tool for blending mathematics instruction. Teachers can use these tenets as a checklist to know whether they are indeed using the program as envisioned. Instruction with KA should include these four components: 1. Formative assessment data 2. Goal setting 3. “Playlists,” or task lists 4. Active and collaborative learning Real-time, student activities management

4. kahoot! Darcy https://getkahoot.com/tutorials/Kahoot_Tutorials.pdf Kahoot -Make learning awesome! a game-based classroom response system https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6gER64oFgA Kahoot! creates a social learning environment that encourages students to play learning games togethe rKahoot! is designed to encourage everyone to look up. This creates a ‘Campfire moment’ where everyone gathers round a sharedscreen to play together. Kahoot! focuses on how you learn, not what you learn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6gER64oFgA

Assessing students using KAhoot! Post- assessment Pre- assessment Progress monitoring https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pn0fbKVAlnc Darcy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pn0fbKVAlnc Questions, along with answer choices, are projected onto a classroom screen while students submit responses using a personal (likely mobile) device. Playing a game of Kahoot! doesn't involve an account, just a game PIN from the main screen and a name. Teachers can create games or use games in the public area. Deeper learning happens when learners consider not just what the correct answers are to questions, but also what the potential incorrect answers are. In Susan’s class, Students can be encouraged to be leaders by researching, creating and presenting quizzes. Your students can also benefit from creating their own kahoots as a means of review.

KAhoot! Darcy Instant, detailed feedback. Kahoot saves the result of every quiz played. Data can be downloaded by teachers (or student creators) and viewed in Excel. With class, question, and individual information, the reports can provide helpful figures. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6gER64oFgA
