Let’s look at one example involving osmosis. Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a semi permeable membrane such as a cell membrane. A semi permeable.

Presentation transcript:

It allows some things to pass through while other materials cannot Mind Stretcher 11/28/16 The cell membrane is known to be “selectively permeable.” What does that mean? It allows some things to pass through while other materials cannot

“Selectively Permeable” Membranes “Semi-Permeable” or “Selectively Permeable” Membranes A semi-permeable membrane will allow certain molecules to pass through it, but not others. Partially permeable membrane Generally, small particles can pass through… …but large particles cannot

Free water molecules diffuse in this direction Partially-permeable membrane More free water molecules on this side of membrane Water-solute particle is too large to pass through membrane Free water molecules diffuse in this direction

Cell Poster Review for Test Step 1: Label the number of each cell organelle in the diagram (I suggest also writing the name of each one next to it too!) Step 2: Use the WHITE sheet on your talbe and copy the correct FUNCTION for each cell organelle in the tables below the diagrams Step 3: Complete the labeling and chart on the back for the BACTERIA cell
