Ancient China Vocabulary

Heritage A set of ideas that have been passed down from one generation to another

Virtue A good quality

Mandate of Heaven The right to rule; the Chinese believed the Emperor had to be kind a fair. If he had these virtues he would be a strong ruler. If not he would be weak.

Emperor The ruler of an empire; a king!

Philosopher A person who studies the meaning of life.

Confucianism Ideas from a Chinese philosopher Confucius, which became a guide for the way people live.

Legalism Chinese teachings that express a belief in the strict following of laws.

Bureaucracy A network of appointed government officials

Ambassadors A representative of the government.

Daoism A religion and a philosophy that teaches the key to long life and happiness is to accept life as it is.
