Warm up 8/22 Using the 3 perspectives, what is the purpose of government? What are the 3 branches of the U.S. government? Congress falls under which branch? Which branch interprets the law? Enforces? Establishes? What are the two parts of Congress? How many members are in each part?

Discussion (CP Only) Is what’s popular “mostly” right? Are popular ideas the best thing to do? Is who’s popular “mostly” right? Are popular people the best leaders?

Government A leadership system that enacts, enforces and evaluates laws Goals of a modern government Conflict Perspective: Protection Ex: military, police, firefighters Functionalist Perspective: Organization Ex: power plants, roads, goal setting Symbolic Perspective: Identity Ex: schools, censorship, values

Two forms of Gov’t Autocratic (Autocracy) Democratic (Democracy)

AUTOCRATIC

Autocracy One leads by force, “rule by one” System of government in which one person participates in leadership. Decisions are made by one unelected leader who chooses what to do (determined by force).

TYPES OF AUTOCRACTIC GOV’Ts

Absolute Monarchy King and/or queen has unlimited power System of government in which a monarch, a king or queen, has all the powers of government.

Dictatorship Military leader with unlimited power System of government in which a military leader, such as a general or colonel, controls the country through the soldiers.

Limited Monarchy King and/or queen has limited power System of government in which a monarch shares power with another group or groups of people. Example: King enforces laws as leader of the military, but cannot enact or evaluate laws.

Constitutional Monarchy King and/or queen has no real power System of government in which a monarch has little or no governing powers as defined by a constitution. Monarch is a symbol of the nation but cannot enact, enforce, or evaluate laws (govern). Governing power is held by elected leaders. Ex: Queen Elizabeth II of England

Oligarchy A few lead by force, “rule by a few” System of government in which a few citizens participate in leadership. Decisions are made by a group of unelected leaders who gather and choose what to do.

DEMOCRATIC

Democracy A form of government in which people have the power to vote. The word literally means: Demos = People Kratos = Power

Direct Democracy All lead through choice - voting System of government in which citizens (those who can/allowed) participate in leadership by voting on laws. Decisions are made by gathering everyone together, freely debating the options, and then vote to choose what to do. No leaders (everyone is the leader). Originated from Greece

In-Direct Democracy Many lead through choice - elections System of government in which citizens (those who can/allowed) participate in leadership by voting for leaders. Elected leaders (chosen by popularity). Originated from Rome Also known as: Representative Democracy
