The Role of the Bystander

What is a bystander? A bystander is someone who sees or knows about bullying but does nothing to help the person being bullied. During a bullying situation you can either be part of the problem by being a bystander or part of the solution.

Watch this video clip about bysanders. http://www.pacer.org/bullying/resources/toolkits/classroom/besmartbewell.asp

Activity 1. Get help from an adult 2. Talk to the person in private In this activity I (the teacher) will read some bullying scenarios to you. Then you decide what you would do in that situation. There are 4 different responses to the bullying situations which are posted around the classroom. 1. Get help from an adult 2. Talk to the person in private 3. Ignore or walk away 4. Try to stop it myself

(move to one of the 4 possible responses in the room) Scenario #1   You and a group of friends are sitting at the lunch table and one of your friends sees a student sitting by themselves at the table next to yours. The student is new to your school and to your class. Your friend begins to make fun of the clothes that the new student wore to school. All your friends start to laugh. What would you do? (move to one of the 4 possible responses in the room) Once all students are at one of the response locations teachers lead a discussion with the students asking them to explain their choices.

Scenario #2 What would you do? You are standing in line for hot lunch; the person in front of you calls a student walking by the line a bad name because of his or her skin color. What would you do? (move to one of the 4 possible responses in the room) Discuss choices. If it is 8:15 or close to it skip the next scenario and go to the slide titled, You have a choice!

Scenario #3 You are waiting in the commons area for the morning bell to ring and two students from your second hour class come over telling your friend to give them his math homework. At first he says no then the two students start poking him in the side. What would you do? Discuss Choices

You have a choice! The Bystander or The Upstander When you witness or know about bullying you have the choice to be….. The Bystander or The Upstander

Which role will you play ? Bystanders- stand by and watch or encourage the bullying. Upstanders- stand up and do something that helps the person being bullied.

Research shows that Upstanders can effectively stop bullying within 10 seconds of an intervention — so, what are you waiting for? On the label sticker write down...I will STAND UP !

Put the sticker on your shirt to remind yourself and others that we can make a difference! I will STAND UP!
