Presentation transcript:

Teaching Point: “To organize the four simple machines.” Do now Discussion: Which of the following do you think is a machine? Why or why not?

TP: “To organize the four simple machines.” A Variety of Machines Simple Machine- a machine that does work with only one motion. Many simple machines together are Compound Machines.

TP: “To organize the four simple machines.” Inclined Plane- a flat, sloped surface that makes it easier to move an object from one height to another.

4 Simple Machines Lever- a rigid rod that pivots about a Fulcrum TP: “To organize the four simple machines.” 4 Simple Machines Lever- a rigid rod that pivots about a Fulcrum

TP: “To organize the four simple machines.” Pulley- a grooved wheel with a rope or string wrapped over it, all rotating about a fulcrum.

TP: “To organize the four simple machines.” Wheel and Axle- a wheel connected to a rigid cylinder whereby they both rotate together.

TP: “To organize the four simple machines.” Quick Assessments Many simple machines put together to do work are called compound machines. True or False A _________________ involves a rigid bar pivoting about a single point, or fulcrum a. pulley b. wheel and axle c. lever d. inclined plane

Intellectual Engagement TP: “To organize the four simple machines.” Intellectual Engagement By connecting many simple machines together, you change the way work is done. How do you think work is affected when you connect more and more simple machines together?

Class Activity- Simple Machines TP: “To organize the four simple machines.” Class Activity- Simple Machines Instructions: Using what we just learned about simple machines… Task A- create an illustration of a lever showing a cause and effect relationship (Hint: when you apply a force on one end (the cause)… what happens (the effect?) Task B- create a cause and effect thinking map for a pulley. Task C- create an argument which shows how any one of the simple machines we just learned about utilizes a force to do work, and how this connects to cause and effect. Flexible Group- take out your portfolio and meet me in the back of the room at my desk.

TP: “To organize the four simple machines.” Lesson Summary In your tables of four, go back into your notes and consider what we have just learned today, and then… 1. Identify three (3) important concepts we learned today 2. Place those the three in order from the most important concept to least important.
