8th Grade French Monsieur Nielsen znielsen@ccusd93.net 480.272.8623 Office Hours are always open on Tuesdays & Thursdays @ 7:00-7:20, or by appointment, made a minimum of 24h in advance by email. LES RÈGLES (Class Rules) Try to say it in French, before you say it in english if you ask to go to the bathroom or water fountain within the first or last 15 minutes of class, the answer will always be no. water is the only acceptable drink in french class if your cellphone is not in the “parking lot” drawers in the back of the classroom, it will be sent to the office without a warning. backpacks go on the counter in the back of the room at the beginning of class. (my expectations for the class) always try to speak French be on time and prepared for class to start at the bell be respectful to your classroom, classmates, and me remain in your seat unless otherwise directed raise your hand to talk take responsibility for your learning by asking questions when you are confused Translator Services: The use of online or electronic translators to complete assignments is considered cheating. Any assignment showing evidence of use of an electronic translator will receive a grade of ZERO and may not be redone. [When unsure of a word, please use WordReference. Les devoirs tards, et le travail des absents. (Late and absent work) Students are able to turn in work late. However, 10% deduction per day late is applied. After 10 days the student will only be able to get one point. Absent students are allowed two days for every day absent to get their missing work and turn it in for full credit before the late deductions start. Students must come see me before or after school the day they return to get any missing notes or worksheets. Long-term assignments that are assigned before the absence are still expected to be turned in on the assigned due date. A Long term assignment is any assignment that has been given 5 or more days to complete. Students may retake quizzes and tests (but not pop quizzes) for up to 80%. In order to do so they must fill out the retake form found on my website. Tests and quizzes may be retaken for up to two weeks from the day of input in the gradebook. Bellwork Every day, as students enter the classroom, a photo will be projected on the board. Students will be given approximately 5 vocabulary words for the picture. Students will have to describe what is in the photo or what is happening in the photo. Creativity is key here, as they cannot repeat what another student has already said. Over the course of 10 school days, students must say at least 7 sentences to earn full points Homework Homework will be posted to the Google Classroom if it has been assigned. Most homework assignments will be passed out in class but may be printed from home. Students are expected to create flash cards for their vocabulary whenever new lists are presented. You should be spending at least 15 minutes every night studying the current vocabulary lists. Especially if you think you know everything perfectly.

What should parents be aware of and how can they help? Encourage students to retake quizzes and tests if their grade was not up to snuff. In order to do so, they must study the material covered in the quiz/test and have the study sheet approved by you. Give and encourage opportunities to use their knowledge of French and be exposed to the language outside of the classroom. (ie have students watch their favorite movies with French audio/subtitles, or French music, encourage them to speak French with francophone neighbors) Push your student to try their hardest and persevere in the difficult process of learning a language. Encourage students to check for class notes on my website or the GoogleClassroom if they miss school. What should parents be aware of and how can they help? Be sure that their student is studying vocabulary every night. By signing, I acknowledge that I have received the class syllabus from Mr. Nielsen. I acknowledge that at this time I have read and understand the contents. if at any time some or all of the contents become unclear, I will contact Mr. Nielsen for clarification.   Student name (printed) _____________________________________ Student signature / date _____________________________________ Parent/Guardian name (printed) ________________________________ Signature / date ________________________________________
