Aim of the meeting – help you understand the expectations in Maths, how we teach it, and how you can support your child. Numbers and place value Addition and subtraction Multiplication and division Fractions Measurement Geometry

Mastery High expectations for every child • Few topics, greater depth • Number sense and place value come first • A research based curriculum • The use of objects and pictures before number and letters • Problem solving is central • Language and Communication lead to understanding • Challenge is provided through an increased depth, rather than acceleration of content Numbers stay small but we have a greater understanding of them

ALPHABETLAND The new number names are: A, B, C, D, … PD for New Numbers Count Teachers D3 S3 ALPHABETLAND The new number names are: A, B, C, D, … You must not ‘translate’ these number names into the banned number names one, two, three, Count with me…. Can you count by yourself? Can you count from L to T? Can you count back from G? Can you count back from P? Can you count in Bs? 2 4

Concrete, Visual, Abstract The principle of the CVA approach is that for children to have a true understanding of a mathematical concept there are three phases they need to master: concrete, pictorial and abstract. Reinforcement is achieved by going back and forth between these representations. 13 – 8 Active/concrete Building visual images Abstract 12 + 19
