Odysseus’ Description Draw Chart in notebook Odysseus Says/Does Odysseus’ Description Plot Advancement

Read aloud, think aloud Open your books to page 1078

Today’s Objective Find Odysseus’ character traits - what he does, says, and how he’s described Discover how his character has changed throughout The Odyssey Prove how his character has advanced the plot (sequence of events) “While I read, I’m looking for how the main characters’ (in this instance Odysseus’) character traits develop throughout the text and help advance the plot of The Odyssey. I find this by paying close attention to how the character acts, what he says, and how he is described.”

We Do Read “The Beggar & the Faithful Dog” pg. 1083-1084 through “The Epic Continues” pg. 1085 Read first for comprehension Then pull an entry for your chart Remember to frame your citations (i.e. “The text states…”, “Odysseus says…”, “In the text,...”)

We Do In your notebook, write a 1-2 sentence response about how Odysseus’ character has changed/developed since Book I 0:39 0:38 0:40 0:42 0:43 0:37 0:41 0:35 0:31 0:30 0:32 0:33 0:44 0:34 0:36 0:46 0:54 0:53 0:55 0:56 0:58 0:57 0:52 0:51 0:47 0:29 0:48 0:49 0:50 0:45 0:28 0:08 0:07 0:09 0:10 0:12 0:11 0:06 0:05 End 2:00 0:01 0:02 0:04 0:03 0:13 0:14 0:23 0:22 0:24 0:25 0:27 0:26 0:21 0:20 0:16 0:15 0:17 0:18 0:19 0:59 1:01 1:41 1:40 1:42 1:43 1:45 1:44 1:39 1:38 1:33 1:32 1:34 1:35 1:37 1:36 1:46 1:47 1:56 1:55 1:57 1:58 2:00 1:59 1:54 1:53 1:49 1:48 1:50 1:51 1:52 1:31 1:30 1:10 1:09 1:11 1:12 1:14 1:13 1:08 1:07 1:03 1:02 1:04 1:05 1:06 1:15 1:16 1:25 1:24 1:26 1:27 1:29 1:28 1:23 1:22 1:18 1:17 1:19 1:20 1:21 1:00

You Do - IB/Honors On your own, read “The Test of the Great Bow” pg. 1086-1091 Read for comprehension first Then fill three more entries in your chart Remember to frame your citations (i.e. “The text states…”, “Odysseus says…”, “In the text,...”) 20 minutes

You Do - IB/Honors Now go back in the text and find two entries for your chart in Odysseus’ interaction with another character that deals with his character traits 10 minutes 10 minutes

You Do On a separate sheet of paper with correct heading, answer essential question in an ACES style response How does Odysseus’ character develop over time, interact with other characters, and help advance the plot in The Odyssey? Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support your ideas. 15 minutes 30 minutes

You Do Sample Answer: Throughout The Odyssey, Odysseus becomes increasingly cunning in his interactions with others, which leads to the reception of what he most desires. In Book I, Odysseus is somewhat wily during his interaction with Polyphemus. Once he intoxicates the Cyclops, he says, “Cyclops, you ask my honorable name? Remember the gift you promised me, and I shall tell you. My name is Nohbdy” (357-360). This illustrates his cunning nature because he acts in deceit against the giant so that he may escape and continue his voyage home. In Book II, it states Odysseus appears as an “old beggar” in tattered clothing, with a “gray beard” (935-990). This illustrates his cunningness has increased because he has gone so far as to disguise himself in shoddy clothing to trick others into doing what he wants. For instance, since Penelope does not know he is Odysseus, she tells him how to “defeat the men who threaten his wife and kingdom” (pg. 1085). This way, he may win his wife’s heart anew. His main goal throughout the story is to return home and reunite with wife and son, which he obtains through an increasingly scheming character.
