Geography of Mesopotamia Chapter 3, Lesson 1 Geography of Mesopotamia

Chapter 3, Lesson 1 Vocabulary Mesopotamia – The region between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers floodplain – The flat land bordering a river silt – The fine soil deposited by floodwaters semiarid – Having little rainfall and warm temperatures drought – Period of little rainfall surplus – An amount of a good, such as food, in excess of what is needed

The First Civilization! Where in the world did people first settle down?

Europe Ancient Mesopotamia Asia Africa

Mesopotamia How did the land of Mesopotamia support agriculture? How did the climate affect farmers? How did the Mesopotamians water their crops during droughts? The rivers flooded each year, depositing fertile soil on the land. The rivers also provided water for the crops The yearly flood was unpredictable, making it hard to know when to plant. Sometimes it flooded too much, washing everything away. Other times not enough flood and drought occurred. They used irrigation canals to bring water to crops

Mesopotamia How did Mesopotamians cope with a lack of resources? They used mud to build houses and defensive walls. They traded surplus grain for stone, wood, and metals from other regions
