Groups in the periodic table that share the same properties Chemical Families Groups in the periodic table that share the same properties

Foldable Instructions

Group 1: Alkali Metals Group 1 Elements Shiny, silvery, and soft Highly reactive Relatively low densities and float on water Usually combine with other elements and compounds In Bohr Rutherford Diagrams, they all have 1 valence electron

Group 1: Alkali Metals Applications Potassium is found in bananas and oranges and is good for athletes Sodium is found in salt and baking soda

Group 2: Alkaline Earth Metals Group 2 elements Silvery, shiny Not as soft or reactive as alkali metals Burn bright colourful flames In Bohr Rutherford diagrams they all have 2 valence electrons

Group 2: Alkaline Earth Metals Applications Magnesium is used in fireworks Calcium is used in the body to build bones Strontium in shells of coral

Group 17: Halogens Group 17 elements Very reactive so rarely exists on their own Poisonous in large amounts Form compounds with alkali metals Can be found in solid, liquid or gas at room temperature In Bohr Rutherford diagrams, they all have 7 valence electrons

Group 17: Halogens Applications Used in lightbulbs for lamps Chlorine used to disinfect

Group 18: Noble Gases Group 18 elements Very stable and unreactive gas Colourless, tasteless, odourless Glow brightly when electric current passes through it Mostly non-toxic (except radon) In Bohr Rutherford diagrams, their valence shell is always full

Group 18: Noble Gases Applications Neon lights Helium used for balloons

Think about it Aladdin discovered a new element. He noticed that it was liquid at room temperature and is highly reactive. Where do you think the element may belong on the periodic table? Explain.
