LIGHT CH. 18. What is Light? Light is an electromagnetic wave that travels through space requiring no medium.
Slide 1 The Physics of Light Why and how do we see light? Slide 1 The Physics of Light Why and how do we see light?
 When light strikes an object it is:. 1) Reflected.
Waves- Vocabulary Wave- disturbance that transfers energy from place to place. Medium- material through which the wave travels. Vibration (oscillation)-
Behavior of Light. Getting the Idea Light is another form of energy. You can see all the objects around you because the sun (or a lamp) is sending out.
Key Concepts: Light travels in transverse waves Light can be reflected, absorbed, transmitted Parts and functions of the eye.
Reflection, Refraction, and Absorption Light travels in a straight line. What happens when it hits an object??? It can bounce back (reflect), bend (refract),
 Light and Matter  Prisms  Colors  Lenses  What you see depends on the amount of light in the room and the color of the objects.  For you to see.

It’s amazing!…Can you imagine life without it?
Mav Mark What are forms of the electromagnetic spectrum?
Lights, Mirrors, and Lenses Light is another type of wave that carries energy. A light ray is a narrow beam of light that travels in a straight line. Light.
Wave Behavior - Reflection  the bouncing back of a wave after it strikes a barrier.  All waves, sound, light, water, EMS, etc., can be reflected!! 
Behaviors of Light So what happens when light enters or strikes a new medium or matter? Light will behave by Reflecting or scattering, Refracting, Transmitting,
Light. Artificial Light Can Be Turned Off and On Examples: – Classroom light – Lamp – Flashlight – Light bulbs.

Unit 14 Lesson 4 What Are Some Properties of Light? Just Passing Through Light behaves in different ways depending on the kind of matter it meets. The amount of light absorbed depends on the material the object is made of. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company

Unit 14 Lesson 4 What Are Some Properties of Light? Just Passing Through Opaque materials do not let light pass through them. Instead, an opaque material absorbs light, which enters the material but doesn’t leave it. When a material absorbs light, the energy from the light is transferred to the material. Many solid objects, such as metal, wood, and stone, are opaque because they do not allow light to pass through. Opaque objects also cause shadows because the objects absorb or reflect all the light that hits them. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company

Unit 14 Lesson 4 What Are Some Properties of Light? Just Passing Through Materials that let light pass through them are transparent. Transparent materials absorb very little of the light that hits them. This makes it easier to see objects through these materials. Clear glass, air, and pure liquid water are transparent. Unit 14 Lesson 4 What Are Some Properties of Light? Just Passing Through Translucent materials transmit some light and absorb some light. Ice, wax paper, and frosted glass are translucent. You can see through translucent material, but the image is fuzzy or unclear. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company

Unit 14 Lesson 4 What Are Some Properties of Light? Mirror, Mirror The bouncing of light off an object is known as reflection. Light from an object that strikes a smooth, shiny surface, like a mirror, hits the surface from one direction and reflects in a single new direction. You can’t see an image in a rough surface, such as cloth or wood, because roughness causes light to reflect in many directions. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company

Unit 14 Lesson 4 What Are Some Properties of Light? Mirror, Mirror As light strikes the surface of an object, the object absorbs certain colors of light and reflects others. For example, grass reflects green light while absorbing all other colors. Black objects absorb all colors of light. They also absorb more of the energy in light. White objects reflect all colors of light and absorb less energy. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company

Unit 14 Lesson 4 What Are Some Properties of Light? Light Bends The bending of light as it passes at an angle from one type of matter into another is called refraction. Refraction occurs because the speed of light varies depending on the material through which the light travels. As light changes speed and enters a new material, the light bends. Unit 14 Lesson 4 What Are Some Properties of Light? Light Bends A prism is a transparent material that separates white light into its component colors by refraction. When white light enters a prism, the different colors of light bend at different angles. Light moves through the prism and exits as a rainbow. Lenses Lenses are curved transparent objects that refract light. Unit 14 Lesson 4 What Are Some Properties of Light? Lenses Lenses are curved transparent objects that refract light. Most lenses are circular and are made of clear glass or plastic. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company

Unit 14 Lesson 4 What Are Some Properties of Light? Lenses A convex lens is a lens that is thicker at the center and thinner at the edges. Convex lenses are sometimes called positive lenses because they bring light waves together, or focus light. This bending allows an image to form at a point called the focal point. Unit 14 Lesson 4 What Are Some Properties of Light? Lenses A concave lens is a lens that is thicker at the edges and thinner at the center. Sometimes called negative lenses, concave lenses spread light waves apart from a focal point. Eyeglasses may have concave or convex lenses, depending on the type of vision correction needed. Unit 14 Lesson 4 What Are Some Properties of Light? Lenses Many devices use a series of lenses to make images clear. Lenses can vary greatly in size. Microscopes use several tiny lenses to magnify small objects. Telescopes use lenses that can be over a meter in diameter to magnify objects. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company
