Review: What is Certification? Process by which individuals demonstrate required knowledge and skill Tool for identifying minimally competent individuals Usually voluntary, non-governmental (vs. licensure) Time-limited Independent of a specific class, course, or other education/training program (vs. certificate programs) Primary focus on assessment All professional certification programs have the same basic key components, regardless of the profession/industry ASPE has content knowledge, expertise, experience = critical SeaCrest brings knowledge of certifications standards, process (especially important for exam)

Many states are now… Requiring CESP Offering higher reimbursement rates to those who are certified Offering large-scale certification efforts by fully sponsoring exam seats

3 Year Recertification Cycle Get/Stay Certified! Do/Learn (obtain CE’s) Upload Documentation Submit Application (up to 9 months prior) Pay Recertification Fee

Recertification FAQ’s

Expires on the last day of the month, 3 years following your date of expiration Example: Certification Date- 6/15/2013 Expiration Date- 6/30/2016 Can recertify up to 9 months prior Email Reminders Sent at 6 months prior, 3 months prior, 1 month prior Sent to professional email provided at time of application

What are the Requirements for CE Credits? 36 CE Credits are required to maintain the CESP™ certification 1 CE credit is equivalent to 1 hour of clock time (except as noted) Documentation which verifies the reported number of CE credits must be submitted with the recertification application All documentation is subject to audit by ESPCC Repeated CE activities/content will not be counted for credit within the same 3-year recertification cycle. All CE activities must be directly related to ESP content.

How do I know if my CE Activity is Acceptable? Check two things: Is it listed as a acceptable activity on the Requirements for Continuing Education Form? Does that activity include the knowledge and skills defined by the Content Outline? Both documents are available for download at apse.org

Acceptable Activities There are many different activities that are acceptable for submission toward your recertification. Full list may be found here

Content Outline: Five Domains/ 80 Topics Application of Core Values and Principles to Practice & Legislation and Funding Individualized Assessment and Employment / Career Planning Community Research and Job Development Workplace and Related Supports Ongoing Support Full list may be found here.

Discussion: How Can we Continue to Strengthen our Professional Community? What are some barriers to recertification? What are reasons people may not recertify? How can we increase the perceived value of CESP? What are some ways we can come together locally? How can we work together to increase state recognition of CESP, thereby its perceived value?
