A visit from Centro Who is Centro? Why are we here? Introduce yourself and explain that we have come from Centro. Has anybody heard of Centro? What about Network West Midlands – signpost to logo? We promote Smarter or ‘Sustainable’ Travel – what sort of travel do you think ‘Smarter Travel’ is? healthy and environmentally friendly transport. Can you think of any healthy/environmentally friendly or ‘sustainable’ transport ? Walking, Cycling, Car Share, Public transport– what are the 3 types of public transport in the West Midlands? Why have we come to see you in Year 6? Have you thought about how you’re going to get there? Hands up opportunities – how they currently travel; how they’re going to travel with ‘not sure’ as the first option. For many of you it will be the first time you have travelled alone so walking, cycling and using public transport is a good way for you to start becoming more independent as you move to become a young adult.

Today’s workshop Understand more about ‘Smarter Travel Choices’ Planning our journeys Comics and games We’ll watch some adverts created by students at Walsall Academy about different types of Smart Travel and we’ll discuss what’s good about them, and anything you might find difficult or are concerned about You will then have a go planning your own journeys some websites Finally, you can have a go on our website Letzgogreen that has comics and games to finish up our session.

Walking Walking – watch the clip first – youtube link from the title if needed What are some of the good things about walking: independence, get fit, socialise, environmentally friendly Any concerns you or your parents have: road safety - lots of road safety distractions (possibly discuss some e.g. Other friends, phones, music) so look out for each other, remember the basics; stranger danger - Walk with friends, choosing the best route i.e. Not secluded, keep your belongings safe – if you have a smart phone would you walk around with £200 in cash in your hand?; weather - think about what you’re wearing – prepare!; time/tired - split the journey if you live far away and get dropped off at a friend’s house who lives closer to school

Cycling Cycling - watch the clip first – youtube link from the title if needed What are some of the good things about cycling: fun; faster than walking; independence; get fit; environmentally friendly Any concerns you or your parents have: road safety - cycling training at your new school, look at the best route that might not go on roads; somewhere safe to leave your bike - find out have they got cycle storage; helmets aren’t ‘cool’ - possibly discuss professional cyclists all use them, James Cracknell caught by a wing mirror – left with brain damage, but what if he didn’t have a helmet on?, think of topical stories e.g. Michael Schumacher and changes in attitudes to wearing helmets on the slopes now; weather - clothing and showers?

Public transport Public transport - watch the clip first – youtube link from the title if needed What are some of the good things about using the bus, train or metro: good for long distances; independence; get fit – you still have to walk to/from stops or you could cycle to a stop; environmentally friendly. Any concerns you or your parents have: personal safety - be careful with your belongings remember there is CCTV for your safety and ‘help points’ at train and metro stops, travel with friends; where to buy a ticket and what sort of ticket our website has information about different tickets to help you find the best value one for you; being around people you don’t know; feeling embarrassed - think about your behaviour on buses too and discuss the dos and don’ts of travelling on ‘public’ transport.

You will be the eyes and ears of the network, but don’t intervene if you do see something – simply fill out the report and the police can look into the incident. Members of the Safer Travel Team will board services where there are repeated problems and can use the CCTV footage for evidence but also to help them trace individuals. www.education.safertravel.info/see-something-say-something/

Car share Car share – watch the clip first – youtube link from the title if needed What are some of the good things about car share: if you really live too far away from school to be able to travel independently then car share is a better option; reduces the number of cars on the road so better for the environment and less traffic than travelling alone by car; socialise. Any concerns you or your parents have: safety – in-car safety, seat belts, don’t distract the driver; not independent – ask to get dropped off a 5 or 10 minute walk from school.

‘Google Maps have just the ticket’ Planning your journey Google Maps ‘Google Maps have just the ticket’ Walking Select ‘Your City’ first Walkit.com Cycling Cyclestreets.net Public Transport Choose ‘Quick Journey Planner’ Networkwestmidlands.com Show Google site to compare journeys by different travel modes – explain that if they finish that they can then go on to try the other websites to get more details like calories, CO2 etc Troubleshooting – if they are using school bus use the public transport planner first as it may have their bus on it and if not, see if they can find details about the service on their new school’s website; ask them to think about what they would do if they missed the school bus or see how long it would take by public bus to compare; it’s also good practice for when they will make social journeys possibly using public transport Hand out post cards for them to fill in and pencils. Set time to complete -10 minutes? After activity get feedback about some of their journeys – how long it will take, how they will get there, what bus, anybody have to catch 3 or more buses? etc.

Smart Travel Choices Walking Cycling Public Transport Car share Confidence Journey Planning Keeping safe A quick recap before they leave: We all understand about what ‘Smarter Travel’ - quick recap what are the 4 types? The 4 travel modes are ‘click’ activated individually. Why is it important? (Health, Environment, Congestion. Also they have started to build up confidence ready for their new journeys – how to plan them and how to keep safe thinking about who you can make the journeys with, what routes you’re going to take (safest not necessarily fastest) and think about doing a practice journey during the Summer. Alternatively you can simply ask the class to tell you something they have learned/something they now know that they didn’t know before the session. They will have the post card to take home to remind them of the websites and suggest they might want to do a practice run during the Summer holiday if they’re unsure. Hopefully this workshop has given them the chance to think ‘outside the metal box’ and consider all their travel options Before you leave you can ask the class which was their favourite story that we can then ‘Tweet’ later.
