WTBS… Your class is responsible for picking up litter on a highway on the edge of your town. Your team has responsibility for managing that project. For each of the five of management functions, identify two management activities that your team must complete in order for the project to be successful. Chapter 7

MANAGEMENT LEVELS Top management Mid-management Supervisors Management by others Chapter 7

Top management Executives with responsibilities for the direction and success of the entire business. Set long-term direction and plans. Held accountable for the profitability and success of the business. Job titles include: CEO, President, Chief Operating Officer, V.P. Spend most of their time planning and controlling activities. Study economy and competition. Approve all major communications. Chapter 7

Mid-management Mid-managers are specialists with responsibilities for specific parts of a company’s operations. Ex. Marketing mgr., Information technology mgr., customer service mgr. operations mgr., & human resource mgr. Take the company’s plan and prepare specific plans for their part of the business. Must coordinate their work with other mgrs. Time is devoted to the organizing, staffing, and implementing functions. Chapter 7

Supervisors Are the first level of management. Responsible for the work of a group of employees. Plan the day-to-day work of the employees they supervise. Make sure that needed resources are available and used wisely. Often evaluate the work of their employees and solve problems that occur in the area. Spend most of their time implementing plans of executives and mid- mangers. Chapter 7

Management by others These are employees that are not managers, but complete work that seems to be a part of one of the management functions. They plan and organize their work. May take part in hiring and training new employees. May evaluate quality of the work they complete. Some experience employees are asked to serve as leaders for their work group. May be asked to lead a project or supervise the work of a new employee. Ex. Group leaders, employees Chapter 7

MANAGEMENT STYLES The way a manager treats and involves employees. Tactical management Strategic management Mixed management Chapter 7

MANAGEMENT STYLES Tactical management Strategic management Directive and controlling Mgrs. will make the major decisions and stay in close contact with employees while they work to make sure the work is done well. Strategic management Mgrs. are less directive and involve employees in decision. Trust their employees to work without direct supervision. Mixed management Combined use of tactical and strategic management. Chapter 7
