What is Scholarly Research?

Characteristics of scholarly journals Author is expert or specialist Publication title usually includes: journal, review, research, bulletin or annals Language: jargon of the field & target specific readers Usually peer review – critically evaluated & selected by a board of experts in the field Structured, formal format Illustrations support assertions Length – longer to offer in-depth analyses Bibliography or list of works cited Little or no advertising

Why Cite? Helps avoid plagiarism Allow reader to find research sources Provide evidence for arguments & adds credibility Standard practice for scholarly community
